We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kumi Hirose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kumi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was in my fourth year at university, I drew more pictures than other students. Upon graduation, I received two honorss: the valedictorian and the university purchase awards. It was my first time to receive an award, but I remember being very excited to get recognition. Therefore, I decided to become a painter.
Even when I had a hard time getting up at 4 am and returning from school at 11 pm at night every day, I was glad to learn that if I made an effort, I’d get great results later.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I think I was around 7 years old, but the Sailor Moon anime was popular, and I loved manga, so I often copied it in my notebook.
Rather than being interested in “art”, it was manga that made me love painting.
And then I got into the Art industry.
I decided to study painting in college. I specialized in oil painting, acrylic painting and mixed media.
What I think sets my work apart from others is that mine is colorful, pop and powerful.
And, what I am proud of is the way I can express the incredible passion in my heart through the painting process.
I hope to express positive energy in my paintings and relate to people in a positive way so words like “getting well”, “cute”, “interesting”, “beautiful”, “cool” are fine with me. It is my goal, my mission and my joy in art to make people feel good.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I hope to express positive energy in my paintings and relate to people in a positive way so words like “getting well”, “cute”, “interesting”, “beautiful”, “cool” are fine with me. It is my goal, my mission and my joy in art to make people feel good.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would be really happy if people all over the world who knew my artwork could gain the feeling of “good energy” and “good mood” and be happy. And for me, that’s the most rewarding aspect of being an artist.
