We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kukana Ana. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kukana below.
Kukana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I start over again, I will spend time creating a clearly defined goal and treating my social media creator journey as a business. I didn’t begin as being a social media influencer/creator could be my career and I could make a living. I would have spent more time developing my brand name if I had known. Sometime later, I thought of changing it to align with my lifestyle, but I was afraid of losing my followers, so I stayed.
If I start over again, I will network with industry resource people, learn, and invest money in developing my strategy. Instead of having the brand reach out to me, I will actively reach out to the brand to promote myself.
I will also collaborate to create more visibility if the brands are slightly related to mine instead of staying narrow only to the niche.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2016, I had an accident that left me with over a year of physical therapy to recover. After that, the meaning of life was somewhat different. I wanted to create a more balanced life and wanted to explore and live fully. Before the accident, I devoted my time to building my career in the financial industry. Even though I love art and music, I didn’t think I had a talent and would be able to make a living. So, in college, I changed my major to Business Economics and started my career in the financial industry after graduating.
After my recovery, I started spending more time going to museums, concerts, etc., and I started my Instagram account by posting pictures of those and my outfits. It’s a learning process, and I like the creative side I could use. Slowly, my account grew, and some brands began reaching out for collaborations. So, I will say I am somewhat unintentional in the current marketing strategy creation. However, I also see the potential of being a social media creator.
When a business doesn’t have a huge marketing budget, hiring someone like myself can provide a marketing service very inexpensively. Of course, I am still growing, so I am looking for more long-term partnerships with brands. There is a big negotiation room with me if brands plan to work in the long term. When I work with brands, I try to see what they want to accomplish and also want to create realistic photos.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Fortunately, starting a creative social media influencer/creator doesn’t require significant capital. In my opinion, if you have an iPhone, you are ready to go.
However, if you want to grow and make it a business, like any entrepreneur, it requires a time commitment and, eventually, some capital.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to inspire people to live stylishly and purposefully for their standards, not outside forces set up to be. In our society, especially for women, there are so many biases against. Sometimes, we forget who we are and what we want and try to fit in with what society expects us to be – regarding family, fashion, and how to act for a particular age in a certain way. Like “Instead of thinking outside the box, get rid of the box” and “live.” I think it’s perfectly ok to pursue one’s happiness selfishly.
