KUAN HSUAN, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

I love drawing since I was a child. From that time, I have been drawing non-stop until now. My scores in other subjects were low. Only art subject got high scores. When I was in Taiwan, I liked to incorporate illustrations into my graphic design. Also with my friend’s encouragement, I started to sell my paintings. When I made the first money with my painting, I was so happy and I realized that I wanted to take this career path. I wanted to be an illustrator and a graphic designer who can flexibly use illustration elements in commercial design. I think I am a lucky person, because my hobby is my career, so I always enjoy working.

KUAN HSUAN, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I was born and raised in Taiwan. When I was in middle school, my teacher knew that I liked drawing so encouraged me to apply to an art high school. When I was in high school, I drew a lot of fine art and began to learn design. But after graduating from high school, I avoided drawing for a while because I drew a lot of rules-filled paintings in high school, which made me lose the enjoyment of drawing.

Later on, I started watching many movies about art. because of the encouragement from my friends, I started using drawing to record my life and the movies and books that I like. By doing that, I picked up my love of drawing again and fell into the world of illustration. This world is very interesting, it has no rules, and no one tells me what to do. All I need to do is to follow my feelings and emotion to create surreal and abstract styles. I have been on this journey from my student life in Taiwan to my current professional path in America. I use illustration and graphic design to provide clients with all the services that need to use visual design to attract audiences, increase sales and solve problems. I have always been good at using my illustrations to integrate into my design. And to use bold and rich color schemes to create riveting interactions, grab the attention of the audience, and make the information easier to understand. Also, I love to smile and funny things. Therefore, I like to use humorous content to convey ideas. I hope the audience can happily and easy receive information through my works.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect is using my illustration and graphic design skills to help the world solve problems and uniquely convey information. Creativity is always unlimited. It is constantly changed and organized into the most suitable way to help the issues get the best solution. From the positive influence on the visual system, the better fluency and acceptance of information to the audience, receiving the response from the audience and empathy for the message, etc. All are the missions of my work. I am happy to accept these challenges and enjoy the process. I think that’s also one of the rewarding aspects.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?

Yes, I like reading and watching movies. I have impacted by many of them, which make me more determined to do what I want to do. (I also drew a series of movie illustrations for the movies I love, haha)

One of which I have impacted was movie- Frances Ha. Especially now that I live in Brooklyn like the heroine Frances and always have to take the F line go home. I highly recommend this movie. The content is humorous and close to everyone’s life. I often recall some parts of this movie as a way to encourage me to stick to what I want to do and believe in myself, no matter how difficult the process is.
