We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ksenija Dmitrovic. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ksenija below.
Hi Ksenija, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I believe that learning one craft never stops really. However we all have certain goals and level we would love to reach. As an artists we usually have talent to begin with, but we need guidance in process of learning more and practicing our craft. I’ve been lucky to find great acting teacher in Atlanta after finishing my formal theatre education. The biggest obstacle we may have on our way is only ourselves. No matter how good is your teacher or agent you have to work on your progress every day. Lack of motivation can happen often but we shouldn’t let that moment determine whole year or month of auditioning and practicing craft. Whenever it gets very hard I like to remind myself why I started doing acting in a first place and everything is fine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Ksenija Dmitrovic and I’m coming from Serbia. I recently graduated with BFA and I decided to pursue my acting career. I love sport fashion and art. I spend most of my years competing in tennis but after that chapter was done acting became my passion. Growing up in my country I saw that acting and art in general was never appreciated enough, so my choice to fallow this path was shocking for my family and friends. But as usual we shouldn’t be expecting people to understand and support us in every decision. We, as an individuals have to believe that we are capable of living our dreams no matter what. I moved to Atlanta few months ago and as every beginning it can get tough. Getting formal education in theatre is great but it’s far from a level that is required if you want to be full time actor. Therefore I started with acting classes thought by Jason Smith and I’m very happy with my decision to explore method acting. Becoming better actor takes time. Currently I’m in a process of preparing for a few auditions and I am excited but at the same time anxious about it. As an former athlete I have high expectations but I also understand that rejection in this industry is inevitable and you just keep going. Film industry is thriving in Atlanta and there is a lot of great opportunities to work on set. Whenever I have a chance I work as an background actor. It’s a great way for starting actors to learn basic set rules, communication hierarchy etc. Since social media become great tool for actors I’m trying to post content related to my industry and strongly advise same for everyone who is serious about this career. Lastly I hope to reach my exceptions and I’m looking forward to be part of all the amazing projects here in Atlanta.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am very goal oriented person in general therefore I believe as an actor you must have certain goals as well. However In film industry is particularly hard to keep your motivation, and move towards the goals, since you are becoming a part of the very competitive and tough world. Although I have a final mission of becoming a great actor and work on big projects, personally I believe in a beauty of journey. Working on your skill can never stop and I always try to focus on a short term goals such as, mastering my monologues, becoming a better scene partner, audition more etc. That is really the only way to feel satisfied and still move towards your final goal.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society often fails to recognize artists simply because we are not representing inevitable profession. We are not saving lives, we are not developing new technologies or discovering new species but we color this world and tell stories that are making all of our lives less grey and more magical. We can support artist even when we cannot clearly see their message or we don’t like their art. We can shop more local art, we can share art on social media, go to see that play or try to connect artists between each other. Art can make us smile or cry and that just tells how important is to never wake up in a world without it.
