We were lucky to catch up with Krystine Sherwood recently and have shared our conversation below.
Krystine , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe that the most important factor in achieving those 6-figure paychecks, is self-awareness which is ultimately mental health. THAT is true success. Knowing who you are at your core determines how quickly and how efficiently you reach your goals, dreams and desires. The more personal development you invest into yourself and actually do the work, the better off you’ll be. There are so many guides saying, “Reach your goals in 6 steps,” and sure those work but those steps don’t always solve the ROOT of the problem. One of my clients who was severely overwhelmed, had breakdowns that ended up in the ER hired me for my 3mo coaching program. In that time, she was able to overcome her feelings of overwhelm, insecurities and second guessing. She is now a multi-business owner, award winning entrepreneur in her town and is currently nominated for the best business owner in her state! All because she took the time to look at herself and do the work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Krystine Sherwood. I’m a salon & spa owner as well as an internationally certified life coach for licensed beauty & barber pros. After graduating University, being in a toxic, unfulfilling relationship, gaining 25lbs and finding myself feeling lost, and depressed, I went to work New York Fashion Week in February and was determined to figure my life out before going back home to Florida. While there, I discovered coaching and what the title was that I had actually been doing already! I immediately enrolled into the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) and started classes I think the next month.
As an internationally certified coach, I help licensed beauty & barber reach THEIR version of success in and out of the salon, spa or barber shop through 1:1 coaching, online education, podcasting, and in-person events. Their version of success could mean better business organization, boundary setting, monetary growth, more family time, marketing, etc. The beauty industry is an all-inclusive, intimate industry where everything affects another thing. I found there was not any coach that touched on a little bit of everything.
The most proud accomplishment I’ve achieved this far is the fact that my coaching clients have reached their goals which means I’ve reached mine. Being able to overcome my own personal perceived weaknesses, turning them into strengths is something I teach my clients, is one of my proudest moments. And also, always pushing myself out of the comfort zone. That’s where growth happens.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I love sharing the story of how I even got to go to New York Fashion week and how I even found myself being a coach to beauty & barber pros. I grew up in the professional beauty industry. My mother was a stylist in North Miami Beach/Aventura in the late 80’s, early 90’s. I got to see first-hand where stylists were zooming back and forth, mixing color, having a breakdown in the back room which in those days was more like a dungeon. I remember seeing her LOVING her job and giving her all to serve others. My mother’s baby shower with me was IN THE SALON! Talk about foreshadowing at it’s finest! My business partner has been my mother my entire career!
Of course, we have our spats and mother/daughter moments but everything I’ve learned is from her. Another piece, many stylists don’t realize until after I tell them is I have 2 university degrees in Public Law and Public Relations–NOT cosmetology. Another words, I am not a stylist by any means; however, I have been groomed to work from the bottom up in the salon world by sweeping floors, washing hair, assisting. I’ve been through the apprenticeship stylists normally go through minus the actual hair styling.
Now, I’m enjoying my time running the business with mom who is still a stylist. Still working behind the chair while I market the salon, it’s stylists and do all the things it entails. I always tell my coaching clients as well as my social media followers, owning a business is the ultimate form of self-discovery.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The ultimate pivot story, which I’ve lightly touched on already, is as a child, you grow up not wanting to do what your parents for a living. For me, I never even wanted to be in the beauty industry. I was set to go to law school and/or go work in PR Firm. I was so ready to go out there and make my own life and my own way in the world. And then I came to the end of my university career and came to a halt. Reality set in. “I’m just a kid. I’m not ready to get out there. I literally don’t know ANYTHING despite what these little papers say!” With that, I decided to take some time off, “find myself” and go work in the family business.
Fast forward to now, about 11 years later, I’ve seen my family business, myself and family grow into versions of themselves that probably would have never happened if I had not pivoted into putting everything I DO KNOW back into the business. Looking back, it’s been the best return in my mother’s investment on both sides–in her child’s education and also in business.
Being honest with yourself, no matter how much it hurts, helps you in more ways than one. It always pays off. “The Truth will ALWAYS set you free.”
