We recently connected with Krysti Schofield and have shared our conversation below.
Krysti, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Schofield Homestead was created with the mission of getting kids out doors more often and off technology. We want to plant seeds into our children at a young age and give them skills they can carry on for the rest of their lives. We focus on animal care, animal feedings and responsibility, team building games and meeting friends. Our mission is to enrich children and families with a great outdoor experience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Schofield Homestead started with a dream of getting kids and adults outdoors and learning basic life skills they can take with them and utilize everyday. I’m a firm believer that kids need to be outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and meeting friends, teamwork and responsibility. Schofield Homestead created “Homestead Days” a children’s summer camp that children can attend 1-3 days per week for 3 hours a day. The children participate in animal care, learn about animal responsibility and work together as a team to accomplish tasks. Children also will go back to the old days and learn to make butter, homemade soap, homemade bread, how to wash their clothes, make pioneer dolls and slingshots. Children also participate in games that are focused on working together rather than competition. They craft, play and meet friends all while being outdoors, and that’s the mission to get children moving, outdoors, into art and music and meeting friends!
Our children’s camp was a hit, and is growing each year. We are adding a greenhouse, more animals and more programs and availability so we can impact our community even more! We are also adding camping and a stay at our home so families can participate in all the activities together but also find peace and relaxation even if it is for a short time. We were able to relocate from 1 acre, to 38 acres in the beautiful San Luis Valley. The stay offers beautiful mountain views all around, walking paths to reconnect with nature, animal experiences and of course courses in soap and bread. We are so proud of the growth and the impact it is making on families. There is so much joy in their stay! We now have a small house stay, a camper to stay in, 3 RV sites and soon we will have tent sites. Our homestead is small and will never grow to house more people than that. We are focused on quality rather than quantity. We want our guests to really soak in what we have to offer and find privacy and peace on our property and leave with a really meaningful experience.
At the homestead also, we make our own homemade soaps, goats milk lotion, chapstick, jewlery and wood products and sell them to the public. We are currently saving for a greenhouse so we can provide fresh produce to the community. We are planting a sunflower field, and working towards getting a dairy cow so we can make and provide fresh butter, cheese and other products.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Living in today’s society you are built on thinking after highschool you must go to college, obtain a degree, graduate and get into a 9-5, M-F job. I always felt the calling to do something different, and I did have a 9-5 job. I quit that job to go after this dream and haven’t stopped. I have amazing support from my husband, and sometimes you don’t know where your next “paycheck” is coming from, or if you are going to make a profit this month, because so much goes right back in the business. Starting out is the hardest, but with alot of praying, faith and showing up 100% we are still making it and we are growing!!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
We don’t pay for advertisements, so word of mouth is huge especially in our small communities. We are now branching out to those travelling through Colorado, and reaching so many more people. We use social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram. We utilize our community boards in stores, Clients are referring us also to friends and family and we have alot of repeat guests and customers coming our way!
