We were lucky to catch up with Krysti Jerdin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Krysti , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started taking pictures as a kid, with my parent’s camera. I always enjoyed capturing moments in our flower garden. In high school, I enrolled in a proper photography class, and began to learn the fundamentals of photography, exposure times, lighting, composition, and the developing process of film.
If I had to state one skill I learned from the pre digital age of photography, it how to capture the scene you want with natural lighting. I use that every time I take a photo. I never rely on auto adjusting.
Back then, iPhones weren’t available, so instant gratification of a photo wasn’t a thing. I really believe that having access to a phone, iPad, or any other digital devices that takes photos is a huge plus. Being able to see your work instantly, make adjustments quickly, and ultimately capture the near perfect photo, not only saves time, and money, it also makes you more competitive.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always had a passion for photography, and also a passion for gardening/ floral arranging. Once Instagram started to take off (2013/14) I was immediately hooked. smartphone’s begin to have decent cameras and editing apps, and I purchased my first digital camera. The rest so they say, is history.
I often get asked why I take such dark and moody photos? It’s not that I don’t like bright photos, it just that when I’m arranging a floral photo in my mind, the work of the Dutch Masters, always enter into my creative mind. I would have to say with certainty, that is my style and inspiration.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having a vision and seeing it come to life. I get this beautiful feeling inside when I see a flower or , maybe some part of nature, like a rock, leaf, or piece of bark, and showcase them all together, maybe in a different way or arrangement than you would normally think. Placing rocks and branches together, using them to support flower’s. I JUST LOVE THE PROCESS!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To enjoy myself. Every time I feel rushed, pressure, or comparison to another artist, I loose my creative focus and desires. I would say my goal and mission driving my creative journey, is to be myself, use the set of gifts/skills I have been giving to create, and be thankful for my own work.
