We recently connected with Krysti Beckett and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Krysti thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I offer fitness services to help women get strong and fit, no matter what size their body is. It’s a very common belief that we have to lose weight in order to be healthy, but it’s actually the last thing to happen. We need to move our bodies and take care of ourselves long before the weight comes off. I believe that we would have much healthier and happier people if we didn’t care what the scale said, and focussed on healthy habits instead.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was not into fitness as a child or youth- definitely the fat kid that got picked last and just grew up thinking “I came from big people. I’m just not meant to be thin and fit”. So when I fell in love with fitness in my 20’s, I think I shocked some people. I became a fitness instructor and personal trainer. Going through 4 pregnancies and 3 C-sections was eye opening, and I invested in core and pelvic fitness certifications to take care of myself and my clients.
Through all of this, I was constantly pursuing weight loss- and I was successful, but the weight always came back. Around 2020, I heard an alarming statistic that only 3-5% of people will keep the weight off for life. I started to learn about the history of women’s health. My eyes were opened to learn that the BMI index was created by the diet industry and was modeled after white, thin, young males. And that most of our standards do not include women’s stats or research specific to women’s bodies.
All this information brought me to the conclusion that selling weight loss was not an ethical way to serve in fitness. I started to focus on true measurements in health- helping moms to get stronger, get rid of pain, stop peeing their pants, manage their stress, love their bodies and want to take care of themselves so they could take care of their kids.
I’m incredibly proud of my business and the women I serve. They have gained tremendous body confidence and are much healthier and happier.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m in the middle of a pivot now! I had moved to online training exclusively in 2019, which served me well in the pandemic. I am grateful. While I’m still able to do that, an opportunity arose for me to create an online strength training course and teach classes locally. It has really taken a lot of thought as to what my brand and messaging have looked like for the last 5 years and what it needs to look like going forward. I am constantly reminding myself that I can let go of what I used to want for my business and move towards what I’m passionate about. Ultimately, I want to reach as many women as possible!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honestly, I think standing up for what is right in health and fitness and building an ethical business. I have a lot of peers who know exactly what I know, but still continue to sell diets and weight loss (even though they know they are harmful) A lot of women come to me saying they know they can trust me because the scale triggers them, they’re overcoming an eating disorder or they just want to feel good in their bodies, without the pressure to do extreme dieting or exhausting workouts. When we create small changes through sustainable habits, we create lasting results (no more yo yo dieting!)
