Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krystena King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krystena , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I opened up my 1st Nail salon in 2016 & by 2018 I found out my landlord did not pay the real estate taxes. The lease was a triple net lease which meant they were responsible for allocating funds for such expenses. I had 30 day to vacate there premises. I was devastated. I had put so much money & hours to make the spa a place for women to feel safe and all of a sudden, i felt threatened. Thereated with what was to come next. I literally depleted the business account to move everything out at such a short notice. Within about 3 months. I opened shop at a salon suite. I went from a 2300 sq ft location to a small 145 sq ft box. Fortunately, it was the best move in the long run. I am no longer running my business in the red and have been debt free for most of my business life span. It proves that God, the universe, whatever people believe in will guide you and its not worth putting up the fight because its a blessing you just can’t see.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What most people don’t know is that I opened up a business, so I can comfortably go to mandatory doctors appointments. I have a brain condition, and it was hard holding down a job that required me to be present.
I decided the beauty industry because I happen to go to nail school and told my self if I was atleast decent, I would move forward.
My decipline is what got me so far, alongside consistency. I was in the shop every single day no matter if I had a client or not. Pulling 90 hours work weeks. It did not matter if I didn’t get 1 walk in, I was going to be there just in case. I did this for months. After work, I would go deliver news papers, only getting about 3 hrs asleep a day. Money wasn’t rolling in m, being a new business and all so i had to make money some how. There were times where I would be at work, get rushed to the ER and come right back to work. It was a time I had a surgery and I came to shop 3 days after, snow and all. Shovled the snow while bleeding through the gauze. I did not care. Business had to go on.
At the shop we offer Nails, facials & waxing. We did massages at 1 point but unfortunately my mom, the massage therapist suffered from a brain bleed and we had to cut that service.
X’sensual Beauty stand out because we are consistent. We have great customer service. I never understood having the mentality of me making a client feel like they should be honored to sit in my chair. My clients pass several nail salon on their way to us, there is no way I will every disrespect that. Im the one who is
honored they are here!
I am proud of the stability I have built for myself and others. I created a job that assists people to feed there family and I take that very seriously.
I would love to continue to gain more business relationships and knowledge so I can continue to grow. I need more tools so I am out trying to find what is needed to make my shop greater.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
One of my favorite memories, its not so much of sale, maybe more of marketing if anything. I was nominated in the the Costal Virginia Magazine 2025 Business Awards, I didn’t know until about 5 days before they were ending the votes. The contest lasted for a few weeks, so I was late getting to it. I decided to still take a chance and put the word out to my clients via social media and we actually won!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We have a loyalty program that offered rewards after checkout out. These points can get you free services! I also have outings pretty often for my clients and staff just to show appreciation. Clients know that we really appreciate them since we are always giving back to them!
