We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krysten Mabry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krysten below.
Krysten, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.

I decided to open the yoga studio after I became a kidnapping survivor. I developed PTSD, anxiety, and depression as a result of the kidnapping. Yoga, meditation, and yoga therapy helped me work through my PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I opened the studio to help others who have suffered trauma and may struggle with mental health issues. I am a yoga therapist, crisis counselor, and life coach, and I am currently enrolled in an MSW (Master of Social Work) program at a private university.
I created a safe space where people from all walks of life can come and feel comfortable. We offer group classes, private sessions, and workshops. We believe that everyone should be able to utilize our services regardless of ability to pay, so we created a sliding scale for those in need. Here are some examples of the services we offer:

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was in my early twenties I was attending community college and taking my prerequisites for a nursing program. I always knew that I wanted to help others so becoming a nurse seemed like the perfect career choice. During this time I fell victim to crime. I was kidnapped and after the kidnapping I developed PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I took some time off from school and finally decided that I was going to use the unfortunate situation to help others. I saw a yoga therapist who taught me how to use yoga and meditation to help alleviate my mental health symptoms. I wanted to help others the way I was helped. I became a yoga therapist and started back to school and earned my associate’s in psychology, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and psychology, and am now enrolled in a master of social work program at a private university. I feel that I am able to successfully help others who have experienced trauma because I have lived experience myself.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
There have been a few times when keeping the business afloat was difficult. The economy plays an important role in the success or death of small businesses. COVID-19 was a very challenging time for everyone in the world. When we were forced to shut down the bills at the studio were still due. Having no income during this time made it impossible to pay all of our operating expenses. Recent inflation has also been difficult for us at YogaStrong. When the cost of gas, food, homeowners insurance, etc., go up it forces us to cut things from our budget. Most of us know how important self-care is such as working out, doing yoga, seeing a mental health professional, etc., but these self-care things are often cut from our budgets during hard times. It is understandable that our budgets must be addressed but cutting out self-care can be detrimental in the long run.
