We recently connected with Krystal Ros and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
As a makeup artist in today’s world, we find ourselves constantly surrounded by what’s new, what’s trendy, who’s using what new product, and what do I feel obligated to buy next. Most of us don’t have a disposable income to spend on every new product that hits the shelves or thats suggested by tiktokers. Makeup expires, it sits on our shelves and eventually it gets thrown away. I personally hate how wasteful being a makeup artist is. It PAINS me to have to use disposables – but it’s something I HAVE to do because of the job I’m in. So when I see others constantly buying the latest and most trendy products- I just sigh because it’s so unnecessary. I know there will always be new stuff coming out and that’s amazing to have options- I just find myself unable to keep up with every single little trend that comes out.
Krystal, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello! I am Krystal, and I am a cruelty-free freelance makeup artist. I currently live in Columbus, GA with my husband and 5 year old son. My husband is military which moves us every 2-4 years or so. Getting to see different places in the country and the world is really neat, but it’s hard to move so often- especially when you start establishing clientele and making friends.
I’ve been doing makeup regularly for the last 5.5 years and absolutely love it. I specialize in soft glam and truly making the client feel like the best version of themselves. Seeing them light up and smile when I hand them that mirror at the end- it’s priceless.
Something I feel really proud of is I only use cruelty free products. There is no excuse to still be using brands that test on animals. Does this limit the brands I can use? Yes, but it hasn’t hindered my work or slowed my business down. I wish more people would really take time to research what animal testing is and know that these large companies need to do better and start making some changes.
I truly love being able to do what I do. Making others feel beautiful, happy and give them that confidence they may need-truly means everything to me.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As I previously mentioned, my husband is in the military which moves us every few years. Moving somewhere new while having a business is difficult and trying to build that clientele up takes time. I whole heartedly believe that your reputation is everything within this business and also within the military spousal community. I love my clients and really do my best to be myself. I am friendly, outgoing – really I’m an introverted extrovert lol. But I match energies, I try to make the whole experience as relaxing, fun, and just down to earth as I can. I want my clients to leave happy and feeling beautiful but also like they just spent an hour and a half or so with a good friend.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of this job is seeing the clients face just light up at the end of their appointment. Reaction videos are kind of my favorite because they’re so genuine and just give you those warm fuzzy feelings. Being able to make someone feel absolutely beautiful is such a gift.
