Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krystal Martin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krystal, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I gave up my childcare career an just decided to pursue the idea of owning and operating a skincare/candle company. I knew I wanted to create products that solved common pain points and created a non-toxic solution to skincare, as well as candles. In the process of leaving everything behind I knew that this risk was worth taking. I began to create a vision of what I wanted to create and how I wanted my potential customer to experience it.
The first step for me was creating a brand name and logo. After spending time researching different brands, I found that many companies were using similar branding styles and colors, so it became important for me to stand out from the crowd.
After much thought, I came up with the name ‘K&K Co.’ It’s short, simple yet elegant which is exactly what my products are about! K&K Co. produces all natural body care products made with premium ingredients, essential oils & botanicals for your skin & home.
After creating a brand name & logo it was time to take action! First step was creating packaging designs for each product line I had in mind (Skincare & Candle). The next step was finding suppliers who could provide quality ingredients at an affordable price point while still following our guidelines of being paraben free, vegan, cruelty free, and ethically sourced.
This risk turned into a business that is still flourishing and prospering to this day.

Krystal, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At K&K Co., we’re committed to providing plant-based solutions for the skincare needs of women and men with dry and problematic skin. We believe that our customers deserve a nontoxic solution that’s safe for the home environment, so we’ve created products that are free of parabens, phthalates, and other harmful ingredients.
We know how frustrating it can be when your sensitive skin is chaffed or irritated by other products—especially when those products are supposed to be helping! That’s why we make sure all of our products are free from common pain points like these.
Our mission is to provide an alternative solution for women and men with dry problematic skin who want a high-quality product available online and locally.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
When you’re a small business word of mouth matters. You have to be able to connect with your customers and have them connect with each other.
Being present in our local community as well as on our social media platforms has helped build a reputation for our company. We decided to attend local markets and connect with local business centers and entrepreneurs.
This gives us the opportunity to meet our customers face to face, ask them questions about their businesses, and get feedback on how we can improve our products.
We also use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn to share information about our products, services and events. This allows us to reach more people and connect with them on a personal level.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
No Matter How Many Nos You Hear Keep Going!
We have faced many road blocks on our path to success as a small business. The common road block I believe many small businesses face is having funding to keep their business doors open. When you are an entrepreneur, it is always about finding ways to make money. We have been rejected by investors and lenders so many times that we lost count!
We were rejected over and over again until we found our first round of funding from a family member. We were able to get enough money to pay for inventory and operating expenses for 6 months. This was our first lesson in persistence because we had an opportunity to stop pursuing our dream but we didn’t let the naysayers stop us from going after what we wanted most in life: starting a family business with my husband!
After getting funded, we needed more capital so we went back to the drawing board and came up with another plan where we would find more investors or lenders who could provide us with enough capital so that we could grow the business further than ever before!
Our journey illustrates our resilience.
