We were lucky to catch up with Krystal Martin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I named my company after my daughters Kaylee & Karrington. This is my way to ensure that I leave something viable behind for them to benefit from. Building generational wealth for my children and their children to come is what motivates me and pushes me to work harder everyday.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After losing our child in 2019, we wondered what could have contributed to our spontaneous loss during pregnancy. We decided to look into what we put onto our body, into the air, and stress for both men and women during pregnancy. We realize in the body care market there is a large amount of synthetic oils and detergents being used in body care and candles.
We began to produce products for a “clean” self-care day without the harshness of skin-damaging chemicals or air pollution. We at K&K Co. grew our belief into an online business, available for anyone that is looking for a perfect day of self-care. We take pride in what we do and strive for excellence in customer service as well as our products. Take a self-care day or mental health day with K&K Co.
We know that child loss is so difficult to cope with and experience. Since graduating from college and obtaining my degree in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, I began to advocate for children, mental health, and child loss awareness. Some days are good and other days could be better.
We plan on continuing our business which is named after my two daughters Kaylee and Karrington, creating “clean” skincare products and candles.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
At K&K Co. we make handcrafted candles, artisan soap, body butter, sugar scrubs, bath salts, and soon-to-be-added body wash and room sprays. Everything in our company is handmade and hand-designed. Even our candle containers which are hand-poured and designed in-house by me! The owner! That is super unique and creative.
We have crystals that are on the rim of each candle, which makes them so beautiful. The reason why we wanted candle containers as creative as ours is that we don’t want to contribute to waste, we want you to recycle your candle container and plant in it afterward. That’s our way of making sure we can reduce waste with our products. We call our candles the gift that keeps giving. That’s what makes our candles super unique and sets them apart from other brands.
OK, but let me get started on how we source our products. Everything is ethically sourced and we use vegan fragrance to scent our candles and body care products. Just know when you shop with our company you get products that do more than soothe the skin or senses, you’ll be getting the love and craftsmanship as well.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building our audience on social started out very slow. I know that organic growth just doesn’t happen overnight, So I began to pay attention to other smaller or bigger brands that sell similar product as I do and took notes on what they did to build their social media presence. Unfortunately the algorithm of social media is always changing, so I knew that I couldn’t rely completely on my competitors for growth. I found free resources such as YouTube, online articles and content creators, basically anyone willing to share how to grow your social media presence, to help grow my own. That strategy has been working for us so far. Gaining free knowledge using free resources and following our competitors. My advice would totally be to always be you’re authentic self while creating content. Nothing gains more traffic then someone being their “true” self. Pay attention to your competitors and see what’s been working for them. Depending on your industry, create material on how to solve your potential or ideal customer pain points.
