We recently connected with Krystal Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
One of the biggest things that my mom did right was taught me to have faith in God. Having faith in God is what now leads my decisions and helped me to make this leap into pursuing content creation full-time. My mom also taught me to have confidence in myself and to believe in myself. When I was younger, my mom used to let me go after whatever it was I wanted and she helped me. When I tried and failed at playing guitar, she bought me the guitars and encouraged me. When I wanted to move to Florida to work for Disney, she helped me and encouraged me the entire time. When I started getting into makeup, she was there cheering me on and showing off my looks to family members. That kind of support is so important to have. It makes you feel like you can do anything. This is why I am not scared to pursue my dreams.
Krystal , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a lifestyle content creator. I have been seriously pursuing content creation for a little more than a year. My content focuses on different aspects of my life including my love of makeup, TV, and my opinions about life. I started content creation at first because I thought it would be fun. I love makeup and shopping and thought that I could be like the influencers I grew up watching so I started my Youtube. After a while stopped making Youtube videos and just focused on working regular jobs until I felt called to go back into content creation. I then quit my full-time job and decided to pursue this full-time. I am most proud of some of the opportunities I have received even though I don’t have a large following. I have worked with brands such as Good American, Exa beauty, Make beauty, and Sephora.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was that I had to pursue a traditional job in order to have the “white picket fence” type of life. When I was younger, it was taught in schools and taught to me by the world that the correct order of life was to go to school and then get a real job and work a 9-5. I was taught that this was the way it had to be done and that being a creative full-time was no more than a pipe dream that very few people got to do. I am so glad that now social media apps like Instagram, Youtube, and tik tok exist to prove to everyone that you can indeed make a living and a career off of being creative and you don’t have to follow the traditional path to success.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing society can do to support artists and creatives is to share their work. If more people would share their friend’s business or a strangers video they found funny, there is no telling who would see it and want to buy from them or work with them. As the saying goes, all it takes is one person to see a person’s content, for lives to change.
