We were lucky to catch up with Krystal Hudson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time, I would absolutely start my business sooner. I started my business in 2018/2019 following a health scare that I experienced. I was longer working full time, but am also not the kind of person to sit still so I felt the need to do something with my time. I originally just started out wanting to create an updated portfolio for my work, a new resume, and a website that I could use to showcase my work. Eventually when I was up to taking on a project or two, I already had a my work in place that I could send. I started out getting a couple of projects, and if really took on a life of its own. It wasn’t before long that people were emailing me when they needed design work done on their homes. As time went on, and as my health got better, I was doing bigger projects and fully back in my creative zone. There’s something so fulfilling about seeing something you draw on paper come to life. With that being said, all of this could have been done prior to the health scare. Starting sooner would have given me the security that I needed and the control over my schedule so that taking time off to deal with personal issues related to health wouldn’t have caused such a shake up in my life. It was that circumstance that caused me to re-evaluate everything, especially in terms of how I want to spend my time and being in control of my schedule. I had already worked as an independent contractor for years, so it would’ve been a more seamless transition, but luckily I already had a great foundation to work from and built from there. If I knew this was the direction I would go in, then I would have planned certain things differently, but ultimately I discovered the time freedom that entrepreneurship could give me. Where people see health, I saw an opportunity to take more control over my life and work than ever.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Being an interior designer has been a childhood deam of mine. I moved to Los Angeles following getting my BFA in Interior Design and immediately immersed myself into the world of high-end luxury design. After working on a multitude of multi-million dollar homes, I decided to start working for myself.
I own and operate the design firm KHDS, Krystal Hudson Design Studio. We are a full service design firm providing architectural, interior design, and styling services. We work with homeowners and investors alike consulting on real estate, updating houses, and helping them get market ready for those selling their properties. KHDS offers architectural drawings, design packages, permit processing services, and project management. We are a one-stop-shop and have a team of real estate and design professionals to make the home buying, fixing, and selling process as seamless and painfree as possible. We make sure your dream home doesn’t turn into a nightmare and work with the best team to ensure top quality results, on budget and on time. No project is too big or small.
For the homeowner, we offer each individual their own brand of luxury. Luxury to one person may be amazing views, for the world traveller, it might be a collection of decor shopped from their favorite country, for a homebody it might be comfy throw blankets and a warm fireplace to cozy up to. A home is a sanctuary, and each of us holds a different vision of what that means to us. Our job is to transcribe each person’s feeling of home into each space we create. Whatever makes you feel the most at home.
For the investor, we offer design packages that will give you a high-end look without breaking the bank. Cosmetic updates, new construction, fix/flips – we help you to save on cost while maximizing your profits.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Peace, love and light all drive my creative journey.
I grew up witnessing broken homes and homes without harmony. I think early on my obsession with homes was in wishing I could create the perfect home environment for everyone. I later realized that I learned at a young age that there aren’t a lot of safe spaces in the world. Places where we can completely be ourselves, free from judgement whether that judgment was based on sex, race, ability, or otherwise. My desire to build safe environments, and give people what they actually need stems from that.
As I got older I realized a lot of spaces like work environments, didn’t always feel safe. I’m a natural born leader, but I don’t always feel like fighting a cause. I channel my energy into creating safe spaces for people, whether they’re hiring me or working for me. I like to work with people and clients who all want to create something thats beautiful, safe, and cherished memories can be made. And anyone who works for me will always have a safe working environment as well. A place to learn, grow, and we love to laugh.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
My business has multiple revenue streams. We provide architectural drawings, interior design, and permit processing. We work with realtors and homeowners to assist with the buying and selling of properties, and also have a coaching component where designers and students can get one-on-one lessons. Whether you’re in the market for a house, quickly need to sell your home, or need remodel work done – we’re your one-stop-shop.
