We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krystal Harriott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krystal below.
Krystal, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Yes, What I do is different from industry standard! I am living my dream, not the American dream. I am using my time, space, and efforts to exist how I see myself in my mind, out loud. I feel like many people struggle with themselves because of society norms and the pressure of being socially accepted. I created the Farusha Brand to allow women to find their freedom and grow within it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am Krystal Harriott born and raised in Miami Gardens, Florida. I graduated from Alabama A&M University, where I relocated to Huntsville, Alabama, to obtain my bachelors degree in Business Administration focused in Marketing. Since I was 9 years old, I have been braiding and doing natural hair to generate income. I carried this skill with me through college to take care of myself and live comfortably. August 2018, My husband married me and we started our family. Today, I am studying birthwork through Holistic Doulaism and Lifestyle education. I teach people how to live free, providing organic self care necessities through my herbal skincare line. I give educational support and comfort to persons looking for alternative methods. Sharing my applied studies of veganism through social media has become another source of inspiration. Doing so, my followers and engagements have grown from something small into something major. Here it is, 4 years later and my products are on the shelf of major beauty and wellness retailers in Huntsville, Alabama where I am getting so much exposure. My first born, RA Taj, was an unassisted free birth, my second born, Ashanti, was an unassisted free birth, and my third born, Alikai, was a hospital unassisted, non-medicated natural birth. Each birth grew me more inspired to study birth work and be of service. When I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a doctor, I just couldn’t verify how I wanted to assist women. My mother had 3 cesarean births and she said if I did child labor, I would have to cut women open and I could not agree to those terms. In my adult years, I have journeyed to my childhood memories and realized I have always had a gift of service. Creating my products allowed me to see a physical reflection of myself and my growth. FarushaKARES herbal skincare line is cosmetic self care products for the mind, body and soul. My products are not white label products from China, I hand made and customized each and every one of my products. I have over 50 products in my apothecary but only emphasize on my 6 top sellers. I have created clothing detergent for new borns with sensitive skin, beard exfoiliates for ingrown hairs and blocked pores, and anal massage oils to soothe tissues and pleasure. I only offer herbal self care skincare products through FarushaKARES. I teach people how to prepare and cook healthy alkaline vegan and plant based vegan meals with FarushaKUKS. I wholesale free cultural inspired clothing that’s Earth friendly and light wear through FarushaKLOSET. I do natural hair braiding under Style My Krown. I provide lifestyle services under FarushaTheDoula. All of these services are what makes up The Farusha Brand, Farusha LLC. I recently added “Motivational Speaker” to my list of talents because I have a gift of words with myself and the people around me. I love the feeling of saying something so simple that makes people think and reconsider things for a more positive outcome on all things living. Solving problems sounds like I am fixing an issue for someone and I don’t cross those boundaries. I am a supporter, I assist people with addressing things they may feel uneasy about. I bring possible solutions to the table to help people navigate through their issues fluently. Sometimes, people’s minds get cloudy and it’s hard to think things through, which happens to all of us. I am here to bring awareness, comfort and reassurance. I am myself, being myself, studying myself and in my own lane. Anyone who isn’t doing self work will find me disagreeable or hard to be of company. I’ve come across many people who can’t vibe that frequency. Just laugh, its healthy anyway. I am genuine, free and fun. I am always down for a good time. I know my presence is euphoric because that’s how I carry myself, I bring the vibes to the party. People with love in their hearts are often inspired, they admire me. People living with hatred easily envy me. I am super creative and bold, I don’t mind being the elephant in the room. I am not desperate for attention but I carry myself like no one is looking. I don’t care to be normal and do what everyone else is doing. I am proud of my 3 children and so grateful to have them. My babies are the only reason I continue this journey. They give me drive to be consistent. Knowing that one day, they will be able to utilize the forces I have put into play gives me an adrenaline rush. I had natural births, vegan pregnancy, and raising vegan children. My children’s favorite foods are healthy options. My children’s cognitive functions are more advanced than the average child at their ages. Raising my children and seeing all that I am pouring into them lets me know that I am doing something great for my family and those to come. I am redefining who we are with my very efforts into my children. For this very reason, I want to have more children, just not yet. I want people to know that anything they imagine, it comes to life. Anything you put your mind to, it becomes real. Use your brain to make something and make your eyes see it!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Studying my niche and putting everything into practice has created a network of people who trust me and my gifts and from that, I’ve developed a strong reputation. The more I practice and share with my social media audience, the more exposure I receive. Making a catchy creative video to teach about lifestyle hacks and common birth work knowledge has made me go viral a couple of times on the internet. Doing this over and over has led me to thousands of followers and growing social media accounts.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2019, I had my first international wholesale customer. The customer requested $1000 worth of my products and I sent so much products to the islands. I had been doing business for a year and was excited to have the opportunity so fast. I feel like I did my best, I sent great products but that opportunity taught me brand image. How I market my brand when I am not in the room is a highlight I have focused on for so long. Yes, I can sell my own products but when wholesale retailers want my products, I have to know how to keep a reoccurring customer. Different tools like flyers, boards, and displays can help me and my distributors generate income to keep my brand growing. While this has required me to grow my brand, my services don’t quite go with the guideline flow many top media platforms require. Common things like social media advertising don’t work in the favor of my skincare products but that don’t stop my show. I have gone back to the drawing boards to reconstruct my marketing plan to execute again and again. I know what I have to provide and I know it will bring me financial freedom, I just have to accept that what I am doing requires a more strategic plan and proper execution. I am excited for what is in store, please follow my social media accounts to stay up to date with The Farusha Brand, or subscribe to Farusha Brand site to see what next to come.
