We recently connected with Krystal Hall and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I personally fell in love with social media going into college. I started building my platform while at North Carolina A&T State University through networking with other students, showing off my fashion sense through posting on Instagram and learning the in’s and outs of influencing through social media. Once I started my business in 2018 I had to not only post for my main page for my personal brand, but also post for my business page as well. I must admit it was very hectic (and truth be told it still is!), but it took a lot of time management and some consistency to get it started.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I realized I wanted to start a business my sophomore year of college (March 2018) while attending North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. I wanted to have a purpose, I wanted to help others and I also wanted to make some extra change. With the help of my mother and close friends, I made the decision to become a personal stylist and name my business after myself, Krys Stylez, because fashion and styling was something I was good at. I styled all of my friends for various occasions and my peers always came to me for fashion advice. Not to mention, I had did plenty of fashion shows on campus during this time and made myself known for my personal style. This left me with a gut feeling that being a personal stylist was the best path for me!
Upon discovering my new passion, I reached out to some of my peers to help me bring my vision to life. My dear friend Kiara Nelson made my very first logo, website and color palette for my business. My mother even invested in my very first business cards, flyers to pass out around campus and pens to leave in my classrooms. I was on the right track!
After carrying out the journey within college, I moved to Charlotte, NC (a newer and bigger city) and I wanted to level up my fashion and styling skills while also attracting loyal clients that could help take my business to the next level. I finally made my business a LLC for more credibility and coverage, rebranded my website, narrowed down my niche to women only and became more consistent on social media and by attending networking events within the city. While I’m still within that transition of leveling up, I have seen so much more growth and progress within my business!
So far, I’m most proud to say that this upcoming February I will be styling someone that will be attending the Grammy’s, I’ve styled a client that was featured on NY and Company’s Instagram story and I’ve also helped several women this year — styling them for business photoshoots, birthday celebrations and more!
Krys Stylez caters to all women no matter their size, age, race or ethnic background through personal styling and creative direction services virtually and in-person if applicable.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honestly, I hope I’m not mentioning my illustrious and amazing HBCU too many times, but ANYWAY — If it wasn’t for my journey on that campus I would not be who I am today. The amazing people and connections I made (and still make), the networking and networking events to branching outside of campus within the Greensboro community, All of these aspects helped me to spread the word of who I am and the talents I bring to the table. With one of those talents being my business, Krys Stylez, LLC, as a personal stylist.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has definitely been Instagram with word of mouth following up in 2nd place! Networking on social media and using my platform definitely helps me reach those clients who can use my services. They can see who I am, witness my personal fashion sense and also see those I’ve styled in the past. Social media is definitely like my 2nd website, but just easier to find!
