Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krystal Frenchwood . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krystal , appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 6 or 7 years old, I loved drawing! It was when I went to middle school that I was 11 years old and decided that I wanted to combine my art with my poetry! I would write it down in my Bratz journal and dream what it was like to be an author/illustrator! In 2020, when I was 25 years old, my finance’s friend had just published her book. I was like, “I’ve always wanted to publish an illustration poetry book.” He responded back, saying, “Why not?” When he said that, those words hit me so deeply and it truly sparked something. That’s when I made the decision that it was time to finally step out of my comfort zone while walking into the reality I wanted , so I took a risk, and decided to become all that I aspired to be.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

What makes me unique as an author and illustrator is that, as an independent self-publisher, my fiancé Alonzo (who is my editor for my books) and I speak and engage with many different groups of people and types of readers all over the U.S. and other cultures around the world. I have come across many people who do not like poetry, or that don’t even like to read at all. However despite the indifferences I was able to transform the way they think, their perspective about poetry, and how they view reading just entirely. By looking at themselves, they can see bits of themselves that are reflected in my art and poetry that they can relate to and is relatable to their lives.
The main thing I would want the reader to know is that dreams truly do equal reality and we just have to believe in ourselves knowing that we can do anything we set our minds to. We have all the capabilities to conceive our wildest dreams but we must will ourselves through all doubts and fears believing in ourselves to achieve.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There were times in the beginning when I would pass out business cards or just tried to inform others about my poetry book and business but people would just walk by ignoring me. It really did discourage me in the beginning but there were many others who didn’t mind taking the time to hear what our brand M3llow_k and what we’re about. Another time was submitting my books to a publisher, and I was rejected. I was so sad, but it also made me realize that just because some people will say no, there are many others that will say yes! So I proudly began to share my story and never doubt myself or self-worth because I am the delimit of my limits .
From that point on I decided that I would not allow people to discourage or deter me on my journey. So when negativity tries to creep in, I simply remind myself of how far I come and still have to go. Also writing things that I am grateful for is a simple exercise to practice gratitude and just remembering to be thankful for the people who have supported me on my journey and still to come.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to touch people’s souls through my art and words. A quick testimonial for instance was a time my poetry or coloring book helped someone through an anxiety or panic attack and being able to journal/ Color through their experiences while reflecting on it as they wrote it down in my books really helped. There’s many other instances as well rather on social media, phone calls/texts, or emails when others reached out sharing how my products and services positively impacted their lives making a difference no matter how big or small. However what I find more interesting is that if you listen closely everyone has a story to tell and you never know who needs to hear it so you should tell your story. Just hearing everyone’s testimonials that I encounter along the way is affirmation. It’s motivating, inspirational encouraging, and enlightening to me. There’s so many diverse lessons you can learn from different avenues of life from one’s pain, to happiness, struggles, or triumphs of success. I also love how it brings out their best creativity in them as well. It’s like waking up one by one to a treasure that right in front of us and is in each and every one of us.
