We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krystal Flores a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
At the start of my business, I decided to donate to two charities: Ronald McDonald House Charity and Eye on Vision Foundation. It was important to me to implement a way to give back because I believe it’s important to support our communities. Both charities mean a lot to me, for different reasons. When my son was in the hospital for two months, recovering from open heart surgery, my partner and I stayed at a RMHC. RMHC supports parents who have a child in the hospital by providing a place to stay, meals, access to a counselor, and more. They are a wonderful charity and I feel grateful to be able to give back. EVOF is a charity focused on discovering treatment and a cure for Visual Snow Syndrome. VSS is a neurological disorder that affects vision. I developed VSS almost 10 years ago. I am hopeful that a cure will be discovered soon.
Krystal , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Soy Latina Candles is a non-toxic home + body brand that elevates spaces through our aromatic fragrances. Our fragrances are inspired to evoke feeling and emotion such as radiance, beauty, and tranquility. I launched my business in December of 2021. My goal was to create non-toxic alternatives to products that I love! Our fragrances are luxurious, aromatic, and complex. Our products are aesthetically pleasing, to create a visually clean home. As my brand continues to expand, we are dedicated to creating clean products for people to enjoy.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I sell my products on my website and am not on any platforms! I decided to launch my website instead of a platform because creative control has always been important to me. I think it’s important for brands to have a cohesive theme when it comes to their website, products, social media, and marketing materials. It was also fun for me to design my website and watch it come to life!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
It’s important to create quality products that are unique because it will draw people in and increase brand awareness. Once people tried my products, they would share with others! This helped my brand grow tremendously. I also think that pop-ups help because customers are able to interact and ask questions. Pop-ups also help bring in traffic and network with others.
