We recently connected with Krystal Dior Hicks and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
That’s a good question. As a business owner sometimes you second guess everything & feel like giving up. 2022 was definitely challenging with the market shifting & the rates going up. The market went from the homes flying off the shelves to sitting longer if they were in a higher price point. A lot of people don’t know this but as the builder you get paid last. A lot of your money is tied up until the home sells. At the end it’s all worth it tho. I’m still happy about my decision to fight through the adversity & keep going. This year Dior Homes is working with more investors & building more homes.
Krystal , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out in corporate in the finance industry. I always hated clocking in and making someone else’s dream a reality. I remember telling my ex I wanted to leave corporate and start a hair extension business. After brainstorming Konfident Hair was created. The business grew so fast that I left corporate. In one month, I made 14k from selling hair extensions. From there Konfident Hair Studios was born so that I could sell hair extensions in a hair salon. I then wanted to branch off and do something different. So, I opened a women’s clothing boutique, K. Dior Boutique. It was a fun experience & I learned a lot. One year I woke up and said I wanted to focus more on service-based businesses. I closed my businesses to focus on what was next for me. After owning a beauty salon, hair extension business, women’s boutique, business coaching business, and other endeavors, I decided it was time to venture off into Real Estate. I then became a realtor in 2016 expanding my portfolio. Once getting in Real Estate, I realized that’s what I was passionate about and I wanted to expand in all areas of Real Estate. I then created The Dorsey Team LLC (now Speedy Cash Home Buyers LLC) for my Real Estate transactions & to wholesale and flip land. After selling lots to several builders and investors, I decided I wanted to get into home building. I then went on to start Dior Homes to bring more modern homes to Dallas. I’m currently working on several new construction projects in the DFW area and continuing to wholesale/flip land. I have also partnered with my business partner Kelvin & we started The Weisenberger Group. We have several luxury projects we’re working on. I have now been self-employed for over 10 years. I have no regrets about my journey and what it took to get here.
Funding your business – tell us the story of how you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I built my capital from flipping land and being a Realtor. I would just stack and save until I had enough to build my first two homes. I’ll never forget I was so excited. Most people told me starting out as a builder you want to only build one home first. I ended up building two homes at the same time for my very first build. It was the most stressful thing I’ve ever done but I have no regrets. I learned so much and here I am still standing.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that I can’t do everything on my own and that a team is needed. I’m very independent and I just feel like most people don’t possess the work ethic I have . I will work all 24hrs in a day if I have to. I don’t feel like that anymore. I have a team of likeminded people who have the same hustle and drive as me and we get it done. Shout out to my team.
