We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krystal Boudreau a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Krystal, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Thank you so much for allowing me to share the story behind the mission of my non profit, Pixiedusted. Our mission is enriching children’s and families’ lives through random acts of gifting to financially support programs and needs that might otherwise go unfunded! But more than just a mission written down on paper, my board members and I are carrying out our mission every month through my passion of random acts of kindness. We believe that a little bit of kindness can go a long way and that there are many ways in our community we can help others such as filling little libraries, providing birthday cake kits to the local food pantry for kids birthdays, helping the local Christmas blessings store, and serving families that have kids in the hospital. Our acts of gifting changes every month and every year and we love filling the gap as we see needs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Krystal, I am the executive director of Pixiedusted. I’ve worked in non-profits for most of my career and have a heart for helping others. Starting a non profit was all just a dream I had in high school. About 25 years ago, I was driving in my car and remember listening to the St. Jude-a – thon and just having tears stream down my eyes. The stories would pull at my heart and I just wished I could give all my money that I didn’t have to them. I knew in that moment that one day….. I wanted to do big things.
As life progressed, I would constantly think to myself… IF I won the lotto one day… I would take toys to all the kids in St. Judes…. which was one of my dreams ever since that drive. Or ONE DAY…. If I am rich….. I will start a non profit, raise money and give money away.
Now I never won the lotto or came into big money, but in January of last year, I decided to make the jump and start my own non profit with the mission of spreading random acts of kindness, my favorite thing in the world. I now have a board of 6 of us and every month we get to decide how to spread gifts throughout the community and fill needs!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This journey to starting and continuing my non profit changed overnight when a few months into creating Pixiedusted, I was caught off guard and went through a divorce. What was started as a small non profit to raise money and give 100% of it back to the community, quickly turned into a question of “Can I do this as my full time job and provide for myself and my two kids?”. The only answer was yes. It was my dream and truly believe that giving to others through kindness is my God given purpose. I had to be resilient, pivot, go back to school to get my non profit management degree and often have to switch gears to remind myself that I have to be a business woman at the same time as a giving woman.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Pixiedusted is still very new and small, but we love connecting with our community to build a social media presence. My board members and I try to keep cards on us at all times that have a QR code on them to direct people to follow us. We have events throughout the year and also try to encourage attendees to follow our random acts of kindness through social media and try to have prizes to win by adding onto our text/email list. My advice is to have a social media rep for your company, try to use tools that you can plan and auto post a month in advance which can eliminate last minute stress.
