Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krystal Blase. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Krystal, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I took was when I decided to quit my full time job back in 2010 and finally pursue photography as a full time career. I had already worked a few years doing photography part time while working my day job and in turn had built a pretty large portfolio while having clients booking me consistently at this point. I think this is what pushed me to really go forward and pursue the dream I had always wanted as my job and make it my one and only career. If I’m honest it was terrifying but ultimately the scariest and best decision I ever made. Looking back I am so grateful I took that leap of faith because it took my places in this journey I couldn’t even have imagined!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Hi! I’m Krystal and I am the owner of West House Photography which serves Northeast Florida but I travel worldwide for weddings and elopements. I also shoot a lot of portrait photography including engagements, families, newborns and boudoir mainly. I have been on this amazing journey since 2010 and will be celebrating 13 amazing years in business full time this coming April. It’s honestly really surreal to think about how long I have gotten to do what I love.
I have loved photography since I was very young and getting to do this as my full time career has been beyond fulfilling over all these years. I pride myself on not only my quality of work but my relationship with my clients (many of which have turned into friends) and their overall experience with me whether it’s a wedding day or just a photo session.
My favorite thing is when I get to travel for destination weddings or intimate elopements and the trust people have in me for their big days is never lost on me. I’m really looking forward to the destinations ahead in 2023 for West House Photography!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my quality of work, time and effort I devote to each of my clients along with the overall experience they have with me has built West House into what it is. It’s so important to me that when someone hires me whether for a wedding day, elopement or even just a photo session that everyone involved has a blast and feels comfortable. The beautiful images that result from people feeling natural and comfortable are always the best. Also word of mouth as well as social media has helped tremendously in growing my business. I think people sharing their overall experience with me to their friends and family who then in turn reach out to work with me is my best source of advertisement I could ever ask for. It’s taken time to grow that but it’s been invaluable! Growing my Instagram and Facebook following in an organic way has been really wonderful too.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2017 and 2018 I struggled with what direction I wanted to go within the business. I had hit an overall “wall” where I still absolutely loved what I did and was so grateful for how far I had come but I needed to change some things to keep it feeling fresh and keep myself motivated. I felt very stuck. It’s so hard running a business let alone one where it’s fueled by your passion and overall creativity so when this happened I really had to sit down with myself and figure out what needed to change for the better. I thankfully did just this and started pouring myself more authentically and intentionally into my business and social media presence while gearing more toward destination weddings and elopements which I knew made my heart happy. As a result I ended up booking more clients who were a perfect fit for me both professionally and creatively and that stuck feeling went away. It truly put me in a direction that spoke to me and the business the best way possible.
