Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krysta Youngs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krysta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
When I was in college, my roommate, who was also my best friend gave me an extraordinary piece of advice. She said, “Krysta, when you write me an email asking me to do something, say something nice before you just immediately ask for what you want.” I took her words seriously and practice that to this day. I’m a go getter, driven and focused on the goal but I always make sure to ask someone how they’re doing or send them well wishes before I ask them for whatever it is that I need or want. She saved me from burning a lot of bridges and I’ll forever be grateful to her.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Krysta Youngs and I’m a Billboard #1 & Platinum songwriter and artist based in Los Angeles, CA. I’m also the CEO of The Haus of Creativity, a company that hosts songwriting camp and networking events.
I’ve been making music since I was a kid and I always knew I wanted to write songs and sing them. What I didn’t know was that one day I would be writing K-pop hits for artists and bands like BTS, TXT, Twice, Stray Kids, Taeyeon and many others.
I graduated from Berklee College of Music and moved to Nashville for about a year and a half. I learned so much about songwriting and co-writing and when I moved to LA I felt pretty confident in my skills.
I think my superpower is pulling emotions from people during our conversation before we start actually writing the song. I listen to them and I take notes because usually something they say in passing is so profound it ends up being the title of the song.
The thing that sets me apart from other people is my unique style. I think if you hear a Krysta Youngs song you’ll know it was me who wrote it whether or not I’m singing it.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’ve had a great experience working with Gala Music. I have a ton of NFT’s out on their site. I think it’s dope that artists can make money from their art. I just wish Spotify would follow suit.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to bring awareness to the music industry that songwriters need to get paid an upfront fee for writing songs. Producers get a production fee but in so many cases songwriters are expected to live off the back end. My question is, what backend? Unless you have a hit song Spotify pays nothing. It’s unfair and it’s only going to change when each and every songwriter starts demanding an upfront fee. I write, sing, record and vocal produce all my demos. I’m a producer. There, I said it.
