We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Krysta Covington a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Krysta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My dream has always been to have an opportunity in acting and modeling, since I was 5 years old. It has always been something that I have been passionate about. I went through extreme obstacles in my life when I was a child because of a sexual assault by an adult that happened when I was 15. I had a daughter that resulted from it and left me hopeless and suicidal. I went through bullying in school. When I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter. I was in the crossfire of gun violence, and ended up being shot. Hit by a car and so many other unfortunate events in my young life. I am blessed to be alive.
This is why I wrote my book “Lifeline Defeating Depression and Suicide among Teens and Young Adults”. The relationship I have with Jesus Christ taught me how to look beyond what has happened and realize I don’t have to give up on myself or give in to feeling like my life is meaningless. God had a plan and gave me purpose in life . My dreams have come true in many ways. I want others to know there is hope.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into modeling and acting a few years ago . I’ve been modeling for over 10 years and acting for about 3 years . I got into the industry in my 20’s and I’ve been modeling internationally and locally. Places such as Dubai, London, Paris, France and Hawaii. I’ve also been privileged to model in Los Angeles, Vegas and New Mexico. I started my career in acting in 2020.
I applied to play a high school student in the Sony Pictures film “Spider Man No Way Home” . I was emailed by the casting director and was informed that they had hired enough students , but they wanted to offer me 3 other movie deals playing a high school student at the age of 37 .
I was hired for the film My Best Friends Exorcism, Shazam Fury of the Gods and Landscape with Invisible Hand. I was thrilled. I applied for the opportunity on a whim just to see if they would possibly consider me and to my surprise I was hired , not for the initial title I was going for but three other titles I had no idea I would get! So it was very exciting.
Even as a background actress working to improve my skill it is very rewarding to be a part of the filming process . You have to start somewhere and I started in a few major productions with my first time acting. It’s very inspiring to go after your dreams and goals and actually reap the benefits of taking a chance . I am living proof that if you try you never know what you can accomplish. I feel like it’s very important for young people to know life gets hard but with God you really can go the distance.
My confidence is not in myself but in the fact that I know the Lord is making a way for me . I have confidence in who I am in Christ Jesus. What is meant for me is mine. I know it’s ok if I don’t get an opportunity, because the opportunities that are for me I will have. I’ve come to the understanding there is no need to beat yourself up just keep going after your goals keep persevering. In my book LifeLine : Defeating Depression and Suicide among Teens and Young Adults. I speak on having faith not giving up and how to really trust God above all the obstacles of life .
My passion, healing and restoration has come from everything I have learned through God’s word and faith. It’s truly fascinating how much better you feel when you realize that your purpose in life is not in your dreams and goals, but in trusting who created you, trusting in the one who made it all possible, and allowing the light that He gives you to shine bright! Jesus is truly my everlasting hope. I wouldn’t be alive today if I had not chosen to trust in the Lord. Instead of drugs and alcohol I chose God and it’s the best decision I ever made.
My book is not only for those who have suicidal thoughts and depression, but it is also for those who are trying to understand the world, understand their purpose, who need motivation and inspiration. My book really gives a detailed account of suffering, trial and error, and also victory and triumph. It’s very inspiring and very encouraging for anyone who is just trying to get through this life with confidence that everything will be ok .
I am most proud of my understanding of myself, and that being so harsh and critical isn’t the answer. Knowing your worth makes all the difference. I believe what sets me apart from other people in the industry is my humble outlook on life. The realization that life shouldn’t be caught up on superficial things. I know from experience God’s favor can make all the difference in the direction of your life and how everything turns out.
In myself I am limited but when I operate in God’s sufficiency, I am unlimited because He is my source. He is my strength. I truly have seen the unlimited power and authority of the Lord in my life. It is surreal! If you are someone who needs inspiration, encouragement or you’re going through a tough time and need direction . My book “Lifeline: Defeating Depression and Suicide Among Teens & Young Adults” is available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Target and also Walmart .
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I remember when I was in Dubai modeling and I was very nervous and intimidated by the entire situation, because I was modeling with people from all over the world. It was an international world fashion show, and I was representing the United States.
I felt a little out of my element but I held on to my faith and pushed through all of the insecurities and negative emotions. I’d definitely have to say my resilience came from trusting that I belong here. I was hired to be a part of the show, and I made it, and I needed to enjoy this moment and embrace it instead of allowing a negative outlook to ruin what God has blessed me with in this moment. I stayed positive and I performed very well. I was proud of myself for pushing through the anxiety. It was a wonderful experience.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my opinion, I have noticed that a lot of actors that are just starting out in the industry have not really been recognized fully for the courage It takes to take a leap of faith.
Starting off as a background actress, I have seen the nonchalant attitudes towards actors and actresses that are not in the principal roles. It’s an uneasy feeling to sometimes feel like you’re not really important and I feel like that needs to change because the background actors are just as relevant. It’s not easy to be a part of a film production working for 12 to 16 hour days. As I have developed as an actress and worked on sets in principal roles such as “ The Family Standards” I definitely see the difference.
If I were given the opportunity to make it big in the acting industry, I would not treat the background actors like they are a nuisance, or as if they are in the way. I will make it a priority to include them in a way that is inspiring, and to just motivate them to keep going because it’s exciting to be in that position even as an extra it’s a big deal. It takes having a courageous attitude to pursue your dreams. I know it would be amazing to see a major actor or actress really just speak life into you, it could make all the difference truly. Thank you for your time and everyone reading this God Bless You !
