Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Krys Purcell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Krys, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Being immersed in the artist scene here in Detroit (and an artist myself) I saw that the need for merch and prints was necessary. In some instances, it could be costly. So I knew I wanted to provide a simple solution: merch supplier. I had ideas on what merch and promotional items would look like and often discussed these with artists, so why not create them?
Krys, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the sublimation business from my love of creating. I love to “make” things; graphics, clothes, paintings, building things, you name it. I knew I wanted to put images on items and create unique gifts, but I also saw a need for artists’ merch. Alysen Jae Design was originally born from custom-painted items like denim jackets and flyers. Then we expanded to buttons, and around 2020 we introduced sublimation items. We “officially” launched around March of 2023.
Our latest demand are tumblers. the 20oz ones are a hit, along with the 40oz ones that look like Stanley dupes. But most customers want the unique, personalized gifts. It’s often like “Hey, can you make…” and if we can deliver, we do!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Clients know they can come to us and receive VARIETY. Our prices are reasonable, and you don’t compromise the quality part of it. I’m big on throwing in a freebie here and there or giving out extras with almost every order. And I tend to be flexible when it comes to payments…hey, we accept Klarna and Afterpay! lol. But seriously, we just have good customer service. I specialize in bundle deals. I have a few customers…actually most, that order several things at once, especially around holidays.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For me, the best new source has been actually using my products. I wear the jewelry I make. I’m seen drinking out of the cups I’ve made. At my 9-5, my office has my products. I’m like my own marketing. A combination of that and word-of-mouth does it.
