We were lucky to catch up with Kryn Shook recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kryn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started on Instagram. I followed a local baker who made cookies. I was always so impressed and interested in learning how. I ended up taking a class of hers and instantly loved the art of it. I ordered cookie cutters when I got home from class so I could practice. A few YouTube videos later and after lots of Instagram research, I was able to make my first batch of cookies. My original plan was to make custom cookies for people as Christmas gifts but when I started posting photos of my cookies on social media I had friends and family reaching out asking if they could buy them. That’s when Shook Cookie Co. was born.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am what you would call a “cookier.” Although I still call myself a wannabe cookier. I make custom decorative sugar cookies for holidays and special events. I’m proud of the fact that I took my first cookie class in September 2021 and by November 2021 Shook Cookie Co. was a business. All while working full-time and with 2 little boys at home. It has been such a fun creative outlet and I have loved continuing to learn new techniques and improve my skills with each cookie set I do.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So when I started Shook Cookie Co. we lived in Minneapolis, MN. In May of 2022 we moved to the Atlanta area. Moving across the country meant I lost all of my current clients. My cookie business is 100% local because I cannot ship my cookies. Not only that moving to a different state meant I would need to research Georgia cottage food laws and apply for a new cottage food license.
I am proud of the determination I had to get licensed here and to put myself out there to meet new clients for Shook Cookie Co. It has not been easy but I am so thankful for everyone in our area welcoming us with open arms and trusting me with their cookie needs.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a hard space. My best advice would be to always speak to your ideal clients. Keep your content in your niche and what is relevant to your audience. Post consistently and don’t be afraid to show your face, especially in stories. If you can give people a face and a personality to have a personal connection with they will be more bought in and want to follow and engage with you!
