We were lucky to catch up with Kristy Moten recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
When I decided to start a blog, as a creative outlet, I read all these posts about how easy it was. I was hyped up to think I could fulfill my creative need and make money from it! Sure, starting the website was fairly easy and writing posts comes naturally to me but, I quickly found that making money from it is not easy. I have to keep my day job. Getting a following is not easy and growing is not easy. There are many hurdles that come with a blog and not very many posts that take you through how to navigate those hurdles. For example, getting blocked from social media outlets and why you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. I’m not overly educated in social media and honestly am not particularly good at it. But I read how important it is to learn it and be active to grow your following. So I did, well I thought. I spent hours and hours making pins and posting on Pinterest, posting on Instagram, and sharing on Facebook. My views started picking up and I got to 1,000 followers. I was excited. It was working and people were starting to read my stuff. I had a few purchases from my affiliate links and it seemed like I was going in the right direction. Then I woke up to not being able to login to my Pinterest account. I was suspended and still to this day have no idea why. I followed all the rules, advertised with them, and never spammed. But still, I’m suspended. My account is gone and all the hours of work I put in is on hold. I have no idea how long or if my account will open again but it taught me an important lesson. I was so discouraged and upset at first. Now I realize that this is teaching me to find alternate paths to success. I should not put all my eggs in one basket or rely on any social media outlet as my traffic driver. It has taught me that is is more important than ever to post consistently, not give up, and give it time. Success doesn’t come over night and it is not easy. You have to work for it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a working mom of four children. My husband is a stay at home Dad. I have a high stress corporate job as a Beverage Director for a major company. After many years in my job, I decided I wasn’t using my creative side as much as I would like. I also knew that after four kids and being a working mom, I had a lot of advice to give. That’s when I decided to start Mommytomany.com, my family blog. Our family has a ton of fun adventures, we are creative, and we face a ton of hurdles. We are also an interracial family. We get so many questions about our lives that I just knew we could help other families with a blog. So I write posts on traveling, parenting, crafts, and fun activities. I love it and I love the feedback that my audience gives. Everyone has been so supportive and I know this is just the beginning!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just really want to be able to help other families. It’s so important that parents know they are not alone. We are all in this journey together, we all have crappy days, and there is no book to follow when it comes to parenting. We all do it differently and just need to support each other.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting has been the driving force behind my success. Whether it’s been being laid off from a job, having another child, or the pandemic, I’ve had to pivot in life many times. The key is to just keep going. To me, it’s not about achieving a goal. It’s really about how I get there and the journey. When life makes you pivot, you pivot and keep going.
