Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristy Hampton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’ve always had a love for the arts, and when an opportunity sparks that passion, you run with it. What started as capturing some talented dancers on their picture day quickly became something deeper. Hampton Stills stands for more than photos of dancers; it represents honoring the art of movement and the artist behind it. Every session is a creative experience, but my work isn’t limited to “sessions.” Whether it’s a styled shoot or a specially curated shoot, I view it all as a form of expression. Through my lens, I help dancers and creatives see themselves the way the world does: powerful and unforgettable.
Some of the most meaningful projects I’ve had have been capturing local dance schools. It allows me to witness the passion and love each dancer has for the art of dance. I get to experience not only their amazing personalities, but also their unique gifts, not to mention seeing their faces light up when they see themselves on camera. Being a Bull City native makes it even more meaningful to capture all of this right here at home. I’ve built this business on integrity and values that bring people closer to their confidence and the fullness of who they are, on and off the stage.

Kristy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Dr. Kristy, IT professional by day and the creative behind Hampton Stills. I’ve always been drawn to creativity, and photography became my way of pouring into people while honoring who they are as artists. Over the years, this has grown into more than just taking photos. I create intentional, guided experiences for dancers, creatives, and professionals who want images that truly reflect who they are. What sets me apart is that I care deeply about the person behind the image. I’m hands-on, I give direction, and I create a space where you can relax and show up as yourself. I’m grateful to always come with vision for what we are capturing, and I’m proud to have built a business right here in my community that values integrity, excellence, and genuine connection. At the end of the day, I want people to walk away not just with beautiful images, but with a deeper confidence in the gifts they carry.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One resource I truly wish I had earlier in my creative journey was photography mentorship and coaching. Having access to experienced photographers who were willing to share real insight would have shifted so much for me. But, what I have realized is that investing in yourself and your business really does elevate you as a professional, business owner, and creative. That’s why I’ve created guides and intentionally connect with new photographers who want to grow. I’ve also built meaningful relationships with other talented photographers, and together we’re committed to doing the work that matters by reaching back, opening doors, and providing the kind of support and access we wish we had when we first started.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been focusing on the client experience. People connect with people, so how you leave someone feeling when the session is over truly matters. We don’t talk enough about that. It’s not just about delivering beautiful images; it’s about how the entire experience feels from start to finish. For me, that means creating a thoughtful, guided experience and delivering on exactly what they came to me for. When clients feel seen, cared for, and confident, they talk about it. They come back. They refer their friends. I would say about 80% of my business comes from referrals and returning clients who have either experienced a session with me before or seen my work of someone they know personally. I’ve even created a Client Experience Guide for photographers, available on my website, because I truly believe how you serve people is what sustains your growth.
