Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristopher Lam. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kristopher thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
My parents are small business owners in the wedding and photography industry. They have been running their business for the past 30+ years. As they were both always busy working; they didn’t really have time to cook for us. As I transitioned from middle school to high school, I began accompanying my dad as a part-time wedding photographer on the weekends. He taught me all about film photography, then digital photography. As any typical high school kid, I didn’t enjoy spending my weekends working and rather be out hanging with friends or at home playing video games. I’ll be honest, growing up, I did feel a bit of resentment towards my parents for not being given a choice to go work or play. In hindsight though, I appreciated what my parents did for me because through that experience, I learned photography, developed a hard-working mindset and developed relevant skills that allowed me to be successful as a content creator.
Kristopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not know me, my name is Kristopher and I run “theirregularlens” page on Instagram. I started my food blogging journey about 10 years ago. I was always in the photography industry and helping my parents with their wedding photography business growing up. As I grew older and began to travel outside of California, I really found a passion for experiencing new cultures and food. I decided to combine the two things I love: food and photography and create a blog on Instagram documenting the places I visited and ate. As my page grew and developed, I was beginning to get noticed by restaurants and social media management companies who wanted to partner and collaborate with me. What started as a hobby developed into a business. Although some people may say that when something fun turns into work, they begin to lose touch with their passion, for me, it hasn’t. The passion to continuously developing my photography and videography skills, traveling, connecting with restaurant owners and chefs, gaining backstage access to how dishes are created and prepared, and being a part of such an awesome community.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a content creator is being able to learn the history of the restaurant owner, chef, and cuisine. It’s not every day you get to sit down and converse with the owner/chef about their restaurant in detail. Each restaurant has its own story and the owners and chef get to tell it every day through their food, drinks, atmosphere, and cultural background. It’s really rewarding to be able to listen and hear their passion transpire through words as they describe their restaurant goals and how much joy it brings to them to be able to create and share food and drinks with the community. The second half of it is being that voice that helps advocate the restaurant, their food, and my experience through the content I create for them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Like every new account, I struggled in the beginning to find a handle name, and identity for my page. My initial intent for starting my Instagram page was to not solely focus on just food, but also on travel and lifestyle. I wanted to first build a solid foundation of food first so I begin to post photos of dishes I’ve had recently. As someone who can be quirky and witty at times, I was able to add my personality to my page by using puns or play-on-words in my captions. This really stuck a cord with my audience. Luckily for me, the ability to come up with puns or play on words was not difficult and really allowed me to have fun with my posts.
