We were lucky to catch up with Kristopher Kane recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability in artistry is simply being noticed. There are millions of talented artists in the world and each have their own style. It’s profoundly difficult getting your name out there and building a business off that.

Kristopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a middle aged guy who, in fairly recent years, have been falling apart physically. I developed Crohn’s disease suddenly a few years ago. I began losing my hearing. My arthritis and other pains seemed to have expanded suddenly. I was laid off from a job and had a lot of difficulty finding work. I decided to put all my effort into creating art. It’s something I wish I pursued a long time ago.
As a multi-media artist, I look at each project as a way to play around and immerse myself in my imagination. Sometimes staring at a blank canvas can drive me crazy. But other times, I feel overwhelmed with all the possibilities.
The thing I’m most proud of professionally, is the amount of kind comments I get from fellow artists and long time friends. Whatever nice things are said blindside me every time. It’s especially rewarding when the best compliments come from people whom I may never meet.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In late 2017, I suddenly became afflicted with Crohn’s. It came out of nowhere and my life changed dramatically. I tried to work through it, but hospital stays and surgeries had other plans. I used that down time to finish my schooling and finally earned an AA.
It was at that point when I realized that I can keep slowly killing myself by trying to appease a corporation- or I can work at my own pace and create what I want. I chose the latter.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t have much of an audience- yet. I think that has to do with a lot of things. I don’t chase trends. I don’t show my face too often. I don’t promote myself enough. However, I have found that what little engagement I may receive, it’s 100% genuine from those who wish me success.
My only piece of advice for beginners is: take the first step. Procrastinating will get you nowhere.
