We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristofer Vilcapoma a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristofer, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
While interning at Lampdock at Blackhall Studio, I noticed that while they had a great business renting out lighting and grip gear to big movie studios, there was a significant gap in the market for indie filmmakers. Indie studios often have limited budgets and can’t afford the high rates that come with renting from places that cater primarily to larger productions. This sparked an idea: what if we could create a service that provided the same high-quality equipment but tailored it to the needs and budgets of indie studios? I realized there was an opportunity to make professional-grade gear more accessible to a broader range of filmmakers, which could ultimately help foster more creativity and innovation in the indie film space. That’s how the idea was born.
Kristofer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the film industry right after high school in 2021. I was fortunate to get an internship at Blackhall Studios which help me learn how the bigger set solves a problem and how I can take that information to the indie sets.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation within the market has been built on a foundation of fairness and a genuine willingness to help, regardless of the project’s size or budget. Whether it’s a big-budget production or a smaller indie project, I always bring the same level of commitment and passion to the table. I ensure that every project I take on receives 110% of my effort and attention. This dedication to consistently delivering high-quality work and being adaptable to different needs has helped me earn trust and respect in the industry.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
keep in touch with clients by reaching out to them almost monthly to stay updated on their needs and projects. This consistent communication helps build strong relationships and shows them that I genuinely care about their success. Additionally, I offer discounts to repeat customers as a way to show appreciation for their loyalty and to encourage them to continue working with me. By being proactive and offering tangible benefits, I foster brand loyalty and ensure that clients feel valued and supported.
