We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristine Pack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristine below.
Alright, Kristine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
This is an interesting question for me because part of what I do for my job is to travel so, do I take a vacation? Generally the answer is no because my entire vacation is actually work. It’s difficult to take a vacation because I run the entire business in every aspect and if I stop working, nothing happens. While I do try to enjoy the moments while I am on the trips that I go on, my mind is definitely focused on work and making sure that I get the perfect shot and capture everything in a good storytelling fashion. It’s also very difficult for me to take a trip and not consider the fact that I should be documenting it Given the nature of my job
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a mom who accidentally became a social media influencer in 2011. I posted a video of my twins putting themselves to bed that went viral. Since then, we have gained over 10 million followers on YouTube alone. We do everything from parenting to travel to youth sports to cooking and experiences. We share wholesome, positive content meant for people of all ages and all geographies. For one year straight we were the second most watched channel in the entire world! It is a humbling honor to be in this position for sure
Have you ever had to pivot?
When we first started uploading videos, I never showed my own face on camera. I focus on my kids and I made kids centered Content. Into thousand 17, the entire YouTube industry was flipped on its head when kids content became a huge no-no. We pivoted and I started doing more adult centered and mom centered Content. This is hard for me because I was very uncomfortable showing my own face. I was fine following my kids around but putting myself as the center of the story was a complete 180 from what we had been doing.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
When we first started our business, we were very very poor. I actually started out by purchasing things used on craigslist or eBay and I would clean them up and post a review of it. It was impossible during 2011, 12, 13, 14, 15 to get free product from a brand. If I wanted some thing, I had to purchase it and I did not have the funds for that so we would look for things used. We finally grew enough that we could afford to buy things and we would start to purchase things to make reviews. Finally when social media became a more popular thing to do, we began getting samples from brands. We were so poor when we first started doing this, partially because we just got thrown into it and we’re not trying to do it, that we would drive through the drive-through line at Starbucks after they had closed and pick up the change on the ground to get a little extra money. My husband was a school teacher and I was a piano teacher and it was difficult to make ends meet, let alone find products and other things to use as props in our videos
