Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristine Kay Larsen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kristine, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Earning a full-time living from your craft is every artist dream. I think actors are misunderstood in this point because they don’t want to be famous, they just don’t want to do anything but acting. I got so fortunate that after filming my first feature “The Trockmorton Revelations” I was able to live off of acting. It’s a big turning point in an artist life when you get to live of your craft. Before I was working my safety job for 8 hours a day and when I got off work I would do 5 selftapes everyday, go to bed, wake up and do it all over again. Every day I would try and do something for my craft. Sometimes it was just an extra selftape, sometimes it was editing a reel and sometimes it was reaching out to different managers and agents. Doing one thing a day that would help my career is what got me my first roles. Funny enough after getting my first lead in a feature film I didn’t stop. I still did 5 selftapes a day, read acting books, filmed more content while also filming a feature. This lead to me getting a second lead in a feature, and you probably guessed it, but I still didn’t stop there and I booked a third. Staying hungry and always keeping your mind open about new projects is why I can make a full-time living. But I’m not a self-made woman I couldn’t have done any of this without all the support I got from my Danish family and my friends who helped me with countless of selftapes.
Kristine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Denmark, here I started my acting career but I always dreamt about acting in Hollywood. When I got accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts my dream came true. Here I learned from some great teachers like Scott Reiniger, Tim Landfield and Dayo Ade. As an actor, I believe it’s essential to have great mentors while also being your own teacher. Every job I get I reflect over how I got it and I apply it to my future work.
When I was on one of my first sets as an actor, they told me to report to makeup and that my rehearsal would be up in an hour. Being very young and nervous I ran my lines a million times in my head while getting into hair and makeup. I wanted so badly to do good, and that was my first mistake. While I was waiting with excitement to do my scene, the crew was having technical difficulties. I was on hold for 6 hours and when I finally got to my scene I messed up my first line. To my surprise the world didn’t end. We filmed the scene afterwards flawlessly, and I was wrapped. This taught me a very important lesson. In filmmaking we’re all in collaboration to create this movie. Things may go wrong but making a movie is the biggest teamwork of all.
I’ve been apart of some great teamwork on films and everything I act in is just as important to me whether it’s a short for a festival or a feature film for Netflix. Everything is a teamwork and everyone is doing their best.
I’m very much looking forward to 2024 where I’m going to premiere on Netflix, Hulu and in the American theaters.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love it when my family and friends stubble upon something I’ve done. One time a music video I was in got played on Times Square and my friend from New York texted me with millions of exclamation points. This made me so happy and this reconnecting between my friend and I is exactly what makes this work so rewarding. Everything I do as an actor I hope will effect someone one way or another. Every artist creates so that others can enjoy and I hope a lot of people will enjoy my work.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest wish is to one day have a little girl see me in a movie and go “I want to do that”. If I ever see it happen I guarantee tears.
