We were lucky to catch up with Kristina Wright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Everyone has crazy stuff happen to them, but often small business owners and creatives, artists and others who are doing something off the beaten path are often hit with things (positive or negative) that are so out there, so unpredictable and unexpected. Can you share a crazy story from your journey?
I previously had a tattoo shop named Pens & Needles Custom Tattoo Company. And one evening before we closed, this 80-year-old lady walked through the doors. Not your typical customer, but hey, we love surprises.
She walked around the shop, took a big sniff, and she said, “This doesn’t look or smell like what I thought a tattoo shop would.” It was late, and everyone was just ready to leave for the night. But it was story time, and we were all listening to this lady talk like our life depended on it. She was a four-time breast cancer survivor; this little lady was tough!
With a lump in her throat, and tears in her eyes she started telling us how she thought tattoos were tacky, and a bad decision in life, but she had been recommended by the local Army base for some specialized tattoo work – areola repigmentation. It’s a fancy term for helping folks who’ve had breast surgery feel like themselves again.
Fast forward a few weeks, we got her scheduled for an appointment, she came for her appointment. She was terrified and alone, so we reassured her that we are all her to help. Two hours flew by like nobody’s business, and suddenly, cheers erupted from the waiting area. I dashed over to find this lady topless, pointing to her newly inked chest saying, “Check out my rack, it’s my first tattoos!” And let me tell you, tears were flowing, and we were all cheering her on. Seeing an 80-year-old lady with an unforgettable look on her face is something you won’t ever forget.
She left me with a powerful message before she left. She grabbed my hand and said: “You’re doing the right thing.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2008, I underwent medical retirement from the US Army due to injuries from an accident, which led to two emergency surgeries. As a two-time Iraq War Veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, I had two ranks left to achieve and 11 years remaining in my military career. Feeling uncertain about my future post-military, I turned to my passion for drawing and digital art, often spending time at a local tattoo shop and immersing myself in the business.
During my downtime on Temporary Disability Retirement Leave, I pursued an apprenticeship in tattooing while also studying business management. However, I grew disillusioned with the lack of investment in the artists and the business by the shop’s owner. Encouraged by the same gentleman who had mentored me, I decided to open my own shop, Pens & Needles Custom Tattoo Company, in 2008.
I envisioned Pens & Needles as a modern, art-gallery-like space where customers could feel like canvases and artists were properly recognized. Through dedicated marketing, advertising, and artist management, I aimed to establish a professional environment for growth and representation. The shop flourished, earning recognition as the top tattoo shop in Colorado Springs from 2012 to 2022, with multiple locations and talented artists.
However, the challenges of running multiple businesses and health issues, exacerbated by COVID-19 and subsequent surgeries, took a toll. In 2022, I made the regrettable decision to merge with a competitor and accept a job, only to be terminated later. Devastated and facing financial hardship, I sold personal belongings to make ends meet.
After enduring months of hardship, introspection, and prayer, I discovered a newfound sense of purpose when I joined forces with a fellow tattoo artist to launch United Tattoo in 2023. This fresh beginning prompted me to reevaluate the industry with a fresh perspective. It dawned on me that it’s not just about providing exceptional experiences for our customers; it’s also about creating opportunities for artists to thrive authentically, free from the constraints of profit-driven agendas.
Our communities deserve spaces where artists can truly flourish, evolve, and find fulfillment. That’s why we chose the name United Tattoo – a symbol of unity and inclusivity. Our mission is to cultivate a culture of community, collaboration, and growth among both artists and clients. Through solidarity, we aspire to cultivate an environment where everyone is not just welcomed, but deeply respected for their contributions to both public health and the art world. Together, we’re committed to elevating the standards of both.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My partner and dear friend, Christy Lumberg, has been an integral part of my life for nearly 12 years. As a mother, tattoo artist, and former shop owner, Christy is not only incredibly talented but also remarkably resilient. She has weathered every storm imaginable with strength and grace, staying true to herself through it all.
From misunderstandings to heartaches, from profound life changes to relationship struggles, Christy’s toughness and resilience have been a constant source of inspiration. Our bond has seen us through it all, evolving from shared trauma to a partnership dedicated to building our dreams and bettering our lives, and others together.
We share a common vision for life, one that extends beyond mere business ownership. Our aspirations are grounded in seeing others adorned with the same respect, love, and trust that we desire for ourselves. United in purpose, we stand for more than just what people have to offer us; we are united to uplift and empower one another.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Crafting and nurturing a high-spirited team starts from the ground up, especially in the hiring process – and that’s where the magic happens for me. I’m all about assembling a crew that mirrors the very essence of our business goals. From fresh-faced innovators to seasoned pros, and even those hungry to make their mark, I want a squad that reflects diversity in every sense – from backgrounds to skill sets.
Every member brings something special to the mix, but there’s one standout: and his name is Steven Cedre, but he goes by the name Sole. With a rich history in painting spanning three decades, and a published author, Sole’s journey into tattoo fascinated me. His unique perspective and eagerness to share wisdom injected fresh ideas and energy into our team dynamic.
In my world, it’s all about creating a vibe where everyone feels not just welcomed, but truly valued for their unique energy and talents. When your team embodies the spirit of your business, competition fades into the background, and we’re left with a seamless synergy that propels us towards our collective goals. That’s all the moral we need!
