We were lucky to catch up with Kristina Sullivan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
As much as possible, I do prefer to work with the same people that I already know that I work well! As an actor/writer, sometimes in order to make certain projects happen, I will also produce. As a producer, a big part of my job is to assemble the right team. Having the right people working together in the right positions is so important! When I need a cast and crew for a film or a show, I first think of all of the people that I already know and that I’m already confident that they are a right fit for this particular project based mostly on their talent/skill level for whatever role I’m considering them for, and also if I think that they’ll be a good fit for this particular project and that they’ll work well with myself and whoever else is already committed to the project. If there are still roles that need to be filled after I’ve reached out to people I already know, then the next group of people who are reached out to are those that I don’t know personally, but someone that I do know personally knows them and can vouch for them. After that, if there are still more people that are needed, then I put the word out to people I don’t already know and hope that I get lucky!
Kristina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an actor and a writer. I started out as an actor, and then as a way to create more opportunities for myself and others who wanted to make movies, I started writing scripts as well. I’m proud of a lot of the projects that I’ve done! However, if I’m going to name names, then I’d say I’m most proud of More Than Meets The Eye because it’s the first film where I was the lead actor as well as a writer and a producer on the project and this film was screened at film festivals all over the country as well as winning awards for Best Picture and Viewers Choice at a couple of the festivals. I’m also very proud of Forever and a Day because I am one of the voice actors on this show, I play the role of Stephanie Markham, and we are currently in the middle of airing season 4, we have won an award for Best Ensemble, and it’s an accomplishment to have been a part of a multi season show that I love from day one and I’m still there!
Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the times when I had to pivot was in 2020 when most people were staying home as much as possible, I was able to still act and write. However, it wasn’t how I had ever imagined, so it was definitely a pivot. In 2020, I auditioned as a voice actor for Forever and a Day, and I was cast in the role of Stephanie Markham! This was my first time acting in a show as a voice actor! I’m 2020, I also wrote and published my first book called Monologues & Scenes 101! Prior to 2020, I wasn’t pursuing voice acting or book writing. However, while staying at home, I thankfully was able to also pivot and stay creative at home by recording for the show at home, and writing a book at home.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that what has helped me build my reputation with fellow creatives is that they enjoy working with me and they like the work that I do, and so they want to keep working with me! And, what has helped me build my reputation with audiences I think would mainly be that they enjoy my work and want to see/hear more!
