We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristina Smeriglio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristina below.
Kristina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
It was my first day at grad school, during my first class as part of my master’s program. I arrived early and sat in one of the desk chairs around the conference table. Our professor arrived and asked that we get ready to take turns and share our take on the assigned reading. The classes I took for my bachelor’s degree did not require a lot of reading for each class, let alone on the first day. Usually, the first day of school was utilized to discuss the class syllabus. Clearly, this program was different. When it was my turn to share, I was embarrassed. I was the only one who hadn’t done the reading. I learned right then and there that this program would test my accountability and require my greatest effort at all times. So from that point on, I was always prepared. When I struggled to keep up, I turned to my classmates. They became my friends and we would help each other to ensure we kept up with the material. Whatever it took, I made sure I had something to contribute. I then realized the deeper value of the readings and writing assignments. While perhaps they didn’t play a huge part in my undergraduate education, and lectures did, in this program the readings and assignments turned into rich discussions and fostered personal growth. And I am grateful for it. I learned from that experience the value of taking full advantage of one’s learning opportunities. If you’re going to do something, give it your full effort. Make the most of the opportunity being presented to you.

Kristina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a writer and editor, providing copywriting and ghostwriting services, I dedicate myself to helping others communicate the truth of who they are and what they have to offer. As my client, you’d be prompted to not only be open and honest with me but also with yourself. After all, the only way I can truly help you and put your message in writing is if you’re honest and transparent. Sometimes, my client doesn’t have a clear vision of their business and what they’re offering. When that challenge arises, I simply ask more questions and help them achieve the clarity they need to fully realize who they are and what they are providing their clients. And once that’s made clear, I put that vision into words. Whether it’s creating new copy or revising what my client already has, I approach the writing process holistically to ensure the message is aligned with my client’s ultimate mission and in a way that best connects with their target audience.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is truth, revealing and actualizing it. Whether I’m having a conversation or creating content independently, I ask the questions that need to be asked to ensure honesty in communication. I took that approach with my novel, Falling Into Fire, as well as with the authors I ghostwrote for, and have continued to do so with my copywriting business. There is no topic off limits when it comes to communicating the truth.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I’ve had this conversation with my family members. They sometimes struggle with my worldview, with my beliefs about my work, with my stubbornness regarding my yearning to work in my field full-time as opposed to my writing being on the back-burner or something I do the side while I work another, more stable job. They also sometimes struggle to understand some of my behaviors like me talking to myself or going to the movies alone. Those are just a few examples, but it’s enough to communicate how alone and misunderstood I sometimes feel in this pursuit to realize my dream and work as an artist full-time. My way of thinking, my behaviors, even my stubbornness, are the parts of me fighting for my dream. They’re the parts of me that are ensuring my success. To give up my dream, to give up my creative side, would be to forfeit who I am and all that I believe in. I would never want someone to feel like they couldn’t be themselves, even if their life looked different than mine. My heart is open and it trusts people’s judgments. It is a trust that I hope is granted to me by those closest to me, a chance to be myself and live in a way that I wasn’t able to before.
