We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristina Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have had a strong passion for art since I was a child but decided to pursue it as a business during the pandemic. I found myself in a depressed mindset after giving birth to my second child and juggling my 9-5 at home, on top of remote learning for my oldest son, and starting over as a mom again after 8 years. I had picked up the brush again for the first time in a few years and put my playlist on and instantly felt a change in my mental state of mind and a wave of peace and happiness pass over me that I hadn’t been able to find. Finally, an outlet to positively express myself, and it turns out, you can make money from it as well. It was a no brainer. The very next day I created Stinasartstudio LLC.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the art scene more passionately during the pandemic and have had the opportunity to connect with other local artists over the last couple years, especially this last summer.
In doing so, I have found new inspiration within my own craft and have expanded many of my services within my business. I have also had the opportunity to gain a lot of knowledge in this industry from surrounding myself with other creatives and getting more involved with the community.
Some of these services include photography, paint and sip events, hand painted acrylic commissions, stickers, merch, as well as vending and community involved art shows. I was even able to finish the year with my first solo art show “The Art of Neo-Soul” which paid homage to iconic neo soul artists that inspire me.
Most recently I have created my website www.Stinasartstudio where my merch and art is available for purchase.
I think the most important part of being a creative/ artist is staying consistent, always creating, and engaging with your audience. I love encouraging that creative side in others and hope to continue to share my love for art with the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is sharing my art with others and seeing their reaction. This is especially true for commission pieces for loved ones, birthdays, etc. Giving someone a one-of-a-kind hand painted creation that they can enjoy forever will never get old to me.
Outside of custom art, I love being able to embrace creativity in the community with events like paint and sip nights. Showing others that they are capable of being creative and creating beautiful things makes me feel good and makes me connect with them on a interpersonal level, and sometimes even sparks their own creative journey.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started off much of my social media with very little followers or engagement because I only posted a picture of my art when I felt like it. I would say a huge part of my success has been to become more comfortable on camera and become more confident in my skills. This required actively creating content and putting it out there for everyone to see. Some will like it, some wont. Do it anyway.
You cannot be afraid to look a certain way to others or harbor the fear of being judged. If you do not believe in your product, no one else will. It starts with you! Networking in this industry and putting myself out there has gotten me so much more opportunities than sitting back and being shy like I was in the beginning of my journey.
