We were lucky to catch up with Kristina Britt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
I’m not sure if this is a customer success story but it certainly involved a successful experience during a really hard time. In the summer of 2016, I was living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I had a successful photography business but always wanted to find a project to focus on, something I was really passionate about. In August, our city experienced a flood like we’d never seen and we found ourselves basically underwater. This meant that not only were roads, homes, and businesses filled with water- all the belongings INSIDE were lost and ruined as well. I decided to create a photography project where I asked residents to tell me something, anything they were able to salvage from the flood waters. A photo album, a piece of jewelry, anything that meant something to them. The local magazine, 225 Magazine, decided to pick up my story! They put the word out and before I knew it, there was dozens of stories rolling in. It was incredible to see how many people were excited to share their stories because they needed to finally focus on something GOOD that came from the floods. I ended up interviewing 5 people and photographing their salvaged items for the article. It was incredibly moving and I was forever changed after meeting these amazing people. It was, by far, the most important work I’ve ever done as a photographer.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a lifestyle photographer who specializes in families, children, maternity, engagements, and newborn. I was a teacher for many years so my expertise in that area always helps me get those smiles and giggles from all the littles. I find that I have a gift for capturing REAL moments and feel so blessed to be able to use that gift to bring joy to others. My work is mostly candid so the smiles, the laughter, the hugs and snuggles are authentic. I love to capture these moments and to feel like I am stopping time for these clients, just for a bit.
I’d describe my style as joyful, bright, fun, and HAPPY. I love a good moody and dark session at times as well. It’s all about the moment and what feels right! I try to gear my sessions towards what my clients want and who they are. I spend time chatting as we walk from spot to spot. I allow the kids to run and play and lead the way. I tend to prefer longer sessions rather than mini sessions because I want to be able take the time and get to know my clients so they feel comfortable. That will fully translate on camera which is always the goal!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I started my business over 10 years ago and in that time, I’ve moved out of state TWICE. This means I started my business from the ground up not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES. Starting a business is hard work and it takes time to build a client base. Having to do it 3 times was one of the most challenging things I’ve had to do as an business owner. But each time, I picked up my chin, wiped off my brow and MADE IT HAPPEN.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning a lesson is never easy- especially when it’s related to customer service. But over the years I’ve learned that I can’t please everyone. As long as I’m upfront and keep expectations in check from the start, I’ve found that most clients have always been satisfied. When you try to hard to please everyone, you start to lose yourself. And as an artist, that’s the end of the road.
