We recently connected with Kristin Yates Coleman and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
2 years ago I was an owner of an Ob/Gyn private practice. I had the dream job, 3 young kids, happy marriage and I was silently hoping to get in a car accident every day on my way to work. I was depressed, overwhelmed and miserable. I knew that the job I had didn’t fit the person I had become but was too brainwashed by our toxic medical system to think that I deserved to make a change. My life went on like this for months until I asked myself what my life would look like if I only had 6 months left to live. In that moment, picturing my children without a mother and my husband alone to raise them, I knew that I had to make a change. I quit my job without anything lined up. It was the scariest and most rewarding thing that I’ve ever done.
Not long after I gave my notice, the perfect opportunity essentially landed in my lap. We decided to move our family from New Hampshire to Georgia, where we did not know a single person. The universe continued to bless us with a home on a beautiful lake in a quiet neighborhood, a work schedule that allows me to see my kids every day and opportunities to serve our new community.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I work as an Ob/Gyn physician but my main identity is that of a guide and supporter. I am also a wife and mother to 4 young children. I became a physician because I wanted to heal people and also because I was insecure with myself and thought that if I was smart than people would think I was special. The fear of not being good enough unconsciously fueled me for decades. Fortunately I found my way into a deeply healing and transformational spiritual journey that has shown me that I am inherently valued and loved. The more I integrate this belief, the easier it has been to create a life that remains in alignment with my values and beliefs. This led me to create a platform called “Rebel Physician” which essentially is a community that supports physicians in cultivating a fulfilling and satisfying career instead of one that is dictated by the toxic medical system and the conditioning of our medical training. This platform includes a podcast, courses, workshops and coaching, which are all free for physicians. My book “Rebel Physician Manifesto” will be released later this year.
My most fulfilling work is listening to, validating and empowering people to make choices that they intuitively know are right but are difficult to due societal norms and expectations.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honesty, vulnerability and authenticity. The more I have been willing to share my mistakes, failures and shame, the more other people resonate with my story and feel safe to share theirs.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I honestly don’t know. There are many aspects about being a physician that I love and feel honored to be a part of but I don’t know that it is my ultimate calling. If I could start over, I would hang on to my passions from childhood and incorporate them more fully into my profession, which is what my mission is right now.
