Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristin Wood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristin, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
The best investment I made was my embroidery machine. When I started my online retail business, I was outsourcing 100% of my products, but sometimes I ran into issues with my supplier with shipping delays and a lack of quality control. Early last year I invested in an embroidery machine with no prior experience with one of these machines, the cost of the machine, the supplies needed for it, and the time commitment to learn this new skill was challenging at the time but has paid off greatly. Now that I embroidery many of my products, I can now offer expedited shipping, increase my profit margins, and offer more custom products.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kristin and I run a small retail business catering to the dubstep community. I got into this industry because I have been in the bass music scene for 7 years now and it has become one of my passions. From traveling to festivals to meeting really interesting people, what you wear at these festivals is a large part of the scene and is the greatest form of self expression and I wanted to design clothing to help people express themselves. The types of products I sell are beanies, bucket hats, tie dye t-shirts, sweatshirts, dad hats, and festival sets. What I am most proud of is my ability to show up for myself and my business each day even when I may not want to. I work another job alongside this one, I am a Marketing Manager at a nonprofit so learning how to balance my two roles is another thing I am proud of.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I have two platforms where I sell my product, on Etsy and through a website created with Shopify. Majority of my sales currently are on Etsy so when I mail out those orders, I put a promo code in with their package to use on my Shopify store. I have more products on Shopify than Etsy as a way of growing Shopify and this is a promo code they can use forever to keep them coming back for more at a discounted rate.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
As mentioned, I sell on Etsy. Etsy was the perfect platform to start off on because I didn’t have to start from scratch in finding interested customers. The dubstep community is very active on Etsy so I knew most of my target market is already aware and uses the platform, it has proven to be very successful for my niche market and continues to attract new people everyday.
