We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristin Summers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristin below.
Hi Kristin, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for Back to Self-Care based on my research on self-care – generational trauma around self-care, symmetry in common myths culturally around self-care and self-love and consumerism trends. I’ve always known I wanted to make a difference in the world. We cannot change the world because our world is actually made up of billions of worlds for we all live in our world, our own reality which we choose to see the world as a response to events and experiences throughout life. I knew it was worthwhile based on my research and the research of others. The idea to combine my IP around the 5-Pillar Self-Care Framework into self-care products came to me as I was looking for ways to reach more people with my framework and to provide more value at a larger scale. Instead of focusing on high ticket clients, who had the money to invest in my online courses, I knew helping as many people as possible was the heart of my mission … and I wanted to keep that part of my mission front and center. I’m not here to change the world. We all live in our world. I’m here to change as many worlds as possible – one world, one mind at a time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Back to Self-Care, founded in 2020, is a general wellness company in Kansas City, Mo., committed to being an inclusive resource for personal development with our CEO’s 5-Pillar Self-Care Framework as the core of all our products and services.
We offer hope and encouragement for those on their path of self-discovery, on the journey back to themselves, back to who they were before the world told them who to be.
Now more than ever, people are struggling to hold onto hope as they process and heal not just from the past but the day-to-day. We are here to offer guidance in one’s awakening and a shift in one’s mindset toward a healthier and more holistic approach to self-care.
I developed the 5-Pillar Self-Care Framework© out of the necessity for a better way of loving yourself and practicing self-care during her recovery from postpartum depression and anxiety several years ago.
Drawing from thousands of hours of research in cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology, my approach to mindful self-care breaks it down into practical and actionable life-long skills centered at its core on self-discovery.
I educate and empower people to know the difference between mainstream self-care and real self-care by showing individuals personally and professionally how to lead with authenticity, empathy and confidence in every area of their life.
I am most proud of 1) my kids taking the initiative to learn entrepreneurship. Nothing about it or was forced. I don’t expect them to take over my business but as long as they are open to learning I will show them and guide them as much as I can. 2) I am proud of myself and all I’ve overcome. Leaving an emotionally and financially abusive relationship, never giving up on myself, and learning my worth and power.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I truly believe in 1,000 True Fans theory, and the power of authenticity, vulnerability and value. When I am providing value from a place of authenticity as we are all humans and all experience the same 28 emotions, people know I’m coming from a genuine place and not from a place of desperation. Yes, we all want to make money. We all have bills but money is energy and flows just as easily into your home and as it does out. When you focus on what you are giving to the world in your time and energy, it gives back to you in a multitude of ways beyond monetarily.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I asked for a divorce, it was a few days before we went into quarantine. Shortly after moving to the basement until I had enough saved up to move out, I lost my job as a magazine publisher. I could have easily settled into a 9 to 5 job but I decided to take odd jobs and work on my business instead. While it was difficult at times, the fact I was able to get out of my own in 18 months with a solid business plan, already paying customers and the confidence to move forward with my business showed me just how resilient I am. I could have went back to a more cushiony job as I had in the past but instead I pushed myself and learned just how passionate and determined I was to succeed. Am I willing to work in a deli to make ends meet until I can do my business full-time? Yes. I am willing to do freelance jobs to cover that car repair? Yes. I define my success and every day I”m winning because I’m taking steps everyday to move closer to the life I deserve every day … and in many aspects I am already living the life of my dreams. And I’m grateful for every moment. I am proof a lot can change in a year.
