We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Rachelle Photography a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, appreciate you joining us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
During the summer of 2019, I had the honor and privilege of traveling to Uganda to a town called Kibaale. We traveled through an organization named Kuwasha who partners with the Kibaale Community Centre. The centre has a private Christian school on it’s grounds along with a medical health centre. My kids and I had the opportunity to visit families of children at the school we sponsor as well as work in the classrooms at the school. We were also involved in helping at a vaccination event for babies and helped build a brick house for one of the sponsored families one of the days. This trip made me incredibly passionate for this organization and helping those who are in poverty and who are our most vulnerable in this world. I am fortunate to be able to bless those who need it more than I do with a monthly donation to Kuwasha which directly goes 100% to the Kibaale children we sponsor and their education. We in turn receive letters and photos on a regular basis which has been amazing!
Kristin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a family photographer in the San Diego area since 2009. I photograph newborns, children, families and high school seniors at all different locations throughout the county. I love working with people and meeting new clients. Many of my clients have become my friends over the years. Most would describe me as fun-loving, energetic and really, really good with kids! I believe I not only provide an insanely high quality caliber of images from my sessions, but also an amazing overall experience as well. I hand edit and retouch all of my client’s images to ensure a beautiful finished product. The biggest thing I desire is to capture connection and provide the types of images that transport people back in time to a happy, fun, joy-filled memory.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I believe the most effective strategy for me has been word of mouth. My clients enjoy working with me and that in turn gets them talking about me to their friends and family. Word of mouth has always been the best form of marketing for me!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think raising three kids while simultaneously running a business has been the biggest illustrator of my resilience over the years. My kids were 1, 4, and 6 when I started photographing clients regularly so it was definitely a very busy time of life for me. This business can be hard, but the benefit of being able to have flexibility has been the best thing ever for my family.
