We were lucky to catch up with Kristin Knox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
For over 20 years I have worked in the media & public relations industry. I started out as “The Fly Girl KV”, an on-air personality and member of the Bad Boys & Fly Girls weekly night time radio show on Arkansas’s number one station for Hip Hop & R&B, Power 92.3FM. During my 10-year tenure with the company I interviewed numerous celebrities, hosted sold out concerts, and served as the Urban Promotions Director, but the thing that gave me the most joy was connecting with the community. I met people from all walks of life and got to know their stories. I learned about new businesses and nonprofit organizations that had resources for the community, and I was often asked to assist with getting the word out to others about the unknown things the Greater Little Rock community had to offer. After 10 years of serving as a voice of the community the company went into bankruptcy and many who had served the airwaves were let go, including me. It changed my entire perspective because I no longer had job security and was left to determine my next move. After some time passed I was hired to work as a weekend news anchor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s National Public Radio affiliate, but was still unfulfilled. In 2017, a woman contacted me via social media to inquire if I still hosted events or assisted business owners and/or non-profits with community events and well the rest was history. Opportunity Knox PR/Marketing/Media was created. It is my mission to create a space where black business women are recognized, recommended, and received when ALL opportunities arise. To help break barriers and bridge gaps that may have limited their success in the past. To ignite their voice in the present. To be a beacon in every community I touch, every business I help and every woman I believe in.
Kristin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I provided marketing services to businesses. With over 20 years in the industry I offer social media content calendars, digital graphics, voice overs, radio/tv commercial scripts, promotional materials for events, on-site interviews and emcee and remote services. Each day I take the “Opportunity” to go above and beyond for my clients to ensure they receive the maximum exposure for each event, product or service that they offer. I have a proven track record that shows if “Opportunity Knox” endorses it then it must be a reputable service.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I definitely think that my past media and marketing experience in the radio industry aided me in building a reputation in this market. I have been able to independently acquire clients and provide quality services to them as if they were with a corporate brand.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic caused a major shift in my business. Like anyone else pre-COVID I was used to coming and going freely, being in large crowds and having face to face contact with my clients. Once the pandemic hit, I was no longer booking in-person events and many clients were focused on saving every penny due to the uncertainty the world was experiencing. My focus shifted to virtual options for my clients such as interviews or business highlights (Zoom & Streamyard became my friends) to continue to assist them with letting the community know their hours, new products or services. Increasing social media content and encouraging a more personal approach with audiences was key. It also allowed me to spend more time with family and decreased my time away from my husband and 3 kids.
