We were lucky to catch up with Kristin Fitzner recently and have shared our conversation below.

I have had many clients come to me with a similar problem. Parents are not pleased with school photos and are looking for a more personalized experience. School pictures are taken with a rush—five minutes per student, no time to check if their shirts were crooked or if their eyes were open. When parents hire me I have children jump, laugh, and play, all while capturing their genuine expressions. The result was stunning. Instead of lifeless, posed photos, parents have portraits that radiate joy. Their personalities are captured perfectly, from mischievous grins to carefree laughter. The is family thrilled with the results. Sometimes, it takes stepping outside the usual to create memories that truly reflect who you are.

Kristin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Hello! I’m Kristin. I have always had a passion for capturing special moments. I started my photography journey in newborn hospital photography. I excelled in this position because I was always playing with natural light and flash to create beautiful moments for parents and newborns. I started my own business in 2023 and in just a few years later my business is flourishing. My work is unique because I consider myself a lighting expert. I am always considering how to play with lighting to make my photos stand out. Another huge factor I consider is the color wheel. I play with complementary colors to draw the eye on the photos. I’m most proud of the personal connections I build with my clients. Whether it’s capturing a fleeting family moment or crafting a professional portrait, I always prioritize creating a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. My favorite moments aren’t necessarily the perfect poses but those genuine, unscripted expressions. That’s what makes a photo meaningful, and that’s the heart of my work.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

The foundation of my reputation is always the work itself. From day one, I’ve made sure to provide high-quality images that resonate with my clients. Whether it’s through sharp, well-composed portraits or capturing a special event, I ensure that every photo is something to be proud of. Consistency in quality builds trust and helps clients feel confident in recommending me to others.
Being active on social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook) has been crucial. I’ve shared my work regularly, interacted with my followers, and showcased behind-the-scenes glimpses of my process. Clients get to see not only the final product but also the effort that goes into it. I have been fortunate enough to be independently contracted to photograph weddings. Through being hired for weddings I have able to network and build professional relationships with other photographers, videographers, wedding planners, DJs, etc. These experiences have built me up as a professional and reliable photographer in the wedding world.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Word of mouth and referrals. This has been the most powerful and organic method of growing my clientele. Happy clients naturally become my best advocates. They share their positive experiences with friends, family, and colleagues, leading to more business. To encourage this, I always follow up with clients after a shoot, ensure they’re satisfied with the results, and sometimes offer a referral incentive (like a discount on future sessions or a small gift). The more personal and exceptional the experience, the more likely clients are to recommend me.
