We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Ferguson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up during the birth of YouTube content creators, I loved envisioning myself as one. I loved recording my day and replicating the edits and DIY’s of my favorite YouTubers. I made my first video in 2015, and from there I knew I’d eventually want to pursue it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a 24 year old content creator. I was was born and raised in The Bahamas, where I first started my content creator journey. I started off as a strictly beauty creator, but as I explored my artistry, I started to fall in love with lifestyle content and my journey with mental health. Through educational and artistic makeup videos, I was able to create a safe space for my community to talk about their mental health journey, while encouraging them to explore their creative limits.
Creating content in The Bahamas is hard, but not impossible. And I create content to show other Bahamian creatives that it is possible to exist in spaces that never considered us.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In January of 2023, I was well on my way of hitting a major creator milestone on instagram. On January 10th, I was among the creators that lost their instagram accounts in a system glitch. Most creators got their accounts restored, but mine unfortunately was not. I lost the account I had since I was 14 years old, years of memories, hard work and connections lost. Anyone could have given up watching the beginning of your journey end in a matter of days, and I really wanted to.
I didn’t give up, I kept showing up for myself, pivoted strategies and started from scratch. I started posting on TikTok and that year I had the honor of working with every major brand on my bucket list. Starting over was a slow and painful process, but today I have an amazing team of managers and I came out of it a better content creator and person.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, I want to prove to myself that I am worthy of visibility. Growing up, I often took on background roles. I gladly sank to the back of any project and became the support, rather than the supported. I struggled severely with my sense of self and my fear of being perceived growing up. Every day I sit down to create, I remind little Krissy that she is worthy of being put to the front and that she can and will do whatever her heart yearns for. It may seem a little selfish, but I create for the Kristin that grew up scared to look in a mirror and speak with confidence, the Kristin that struggled with low self esteem and anxiety. If she could see me now, she wouldn’t believe how far we’ve come and how far we’re going.
