We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kristin Campbell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kristin below.
Kristin, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
In the world of home design and decorating, darker paint colors are starting to trend. These are beautiful, complex, rich tones of browns, greens, blues and grays.
I was recently working on a bathroom design plan for a client. They were gutting the bathroom and would be painting new vanities. I encouraged them to go dark. This couple was split on the thought of it; one loved the idea and one was worried it would be too dark. They did end up moving forward with recommendation of Sherwin Williams Iron Ore 7069 and love it! The walls, countertop and new tiled shower are a bit lighter, so the room feels very bright.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Kristin Therese Designs has been helping people with their homes since 2010. We started out primarily only doing home staging in the form of staging consultations as well as vacant staging. As our design business started to increase around 2018, we decided to discontinue vacant staging, and now focus on Occupied Home Staging consultations; helping the homeowner sell while they are living in the home.
Our heart lies in the design world – helping people fall in love with their living space, whatever that may be – a home, condo, apartment, etc. We offer a variety of design services from consultations, to full-service, large-scale design projects. Most of these include kitchen and bath updates, new paint colors, flooring, countertops, furniture, decor and artwork.
We also offer an online design service called E-Design. Everything is done online, so I am able to work with any client, anywhere they may be. This service is done one room at a time with a full design plan and instruction on how to shop for and implement the design plan.
Just recently, we also received certification as a Vacation Rental Design Expert, and will soon be incorporating short term rental property design into our offerings.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When COVID hit and the world was essentially house-bound, there was a big shift in my business. I started offering virtual home staging consultations and I rolled out my E-Design services. The timing was perfect – since so many people were now stuck at home almost 24/7, they were looking around and discovering what they didn’t like about the house and now willing and wanting to make those changes.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I self-funded my business. I purposely invested in a low-cost business model of basic home office supplies and training. Initially I purchased some decorative accessories for my staging business, but I never made the leap into renting out a warehouse and stocking it with a bunch of staging inventory (furniture, decor, artwork, etc.). I always wanted to keep my business small, so this model fit perfectly. I’ve made many adjustments over the years and eventually eliminated my vacant staging business as my design business grew. The design part of my business is truly what brings me joy in my business. I love seeing people fall in love with their homes!
