We recently connected with Kristin Bush and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As a homeschooling mama, one thing I’ve learned is that it’s a never ending journey in learning and in new things. We moved to a new area this year and part of that move has had us try new things.
I’m organizing a Wild + Free group for the area which is a way to bring together homeschooling families. I’m also organizing Science Olympiad teams (middle school and high school). It’s a lot but it’s worth it for my kids to have the academic extra curricular and the community.
Kristin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My story is one of family and faith. I have five children (the oldest turns 16 in August, the youngest just turned 5 in May) and have been married for 13 years now. When the eldest was 4 and the second was just born, my husband and I decided that we would homeschool. Then as we moved in several different states, we realized that we needed to homeschool. So that’s how we’re in year 12 of homeschooling. I decided to start coaching other moms and wives after realizing that what comes natural to me, doesn’t come natural to others and I want to help them succeed. To see them homeschool without stress and burnout, to help them manage their home well and with joy. To see them manage their homes in such a way that everyone who enters is blessed. To invest in their marriage, so that we glorify God and lay strong foundations for our families and children. And for many, that aspect alone breaks generational curses.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Some early resources I wish I knew about is Science Olympiad, the different approaches, Wild + Free just to start. With Science Olympiad, I learn about them at the beginning of 2023, but I wish I’d have known about them so much earlier as it is something I could have had my elder daughter participate in at the beginning of sixth grade. The same with Wild + Free, I learned about this amazing community in 2018-2019 but what it I’d learned about it early on when they first started, how much more community would I have had? How much more support would I have found? I wish I’d known about Charlotte Mason and classical education when I started homeschooling, it would have made the journey much more consistent and stable.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There are many lessons I’ve had to unlearn and one of them is the idea that lectures are best. I’ve learned that round table discussions are best. They allow for our children to participate in the learning process rather than simply take notes.
Another lesson is that moms and wives should always have it together. None of this comes with a manual, however, thankfully life comes with the possibility of other moms and wives who are a little further along in the journey and can share their wins, their lessons, their life hacks. And wisdom mandates that I tuck away much of what I hear to use when I need it but also to now be that mom/wife sharing the nuggets of life with other newer moms and wives.
