We recently connected with Kristie Wolf and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kristie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always heard that to be a better writer you need to read a lot. I had that part down. I’d been reading romance novels since I was a teenager so I figured I knew how to write one. Boy, was I wrong. I wrote my first two books without taking a class on how to write a novel, or even reading a book on the subject. It wasn’t until I attended my first writing conference in 2016 that I realized two things. First, I had a lot to learn. Second, I needed to find my tribe. When I got home, I read the craft books that were recommended during the conference. I joined writing associations. I joined a critique group and shared my work. I attended workshops, asked questions, and learned from my peers.
Looking back, I should have spent time learning how to write a book before I completed on. The outcome would have been much better. I’ve learned that patience, sharing your work with others, and considering feedback are crucial elements to success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I write steamy stories about fearless heroes and badass heroines who fight for justice and love while burning up the pages. My passion for writing romance ignited during my teenage years when I told my mom I was going to write a novel someday. That goal became a reality in October of 2023 with the release of Too Dangerous to Love, the first book in my Project VIPER Series. This series is about a team of super soldiers and the super smart women they don’t intend to fall in love with but fall hard for anyway.
In February of 2024 I released, Knife to the Heart, the first book in my Blood Snow Series, This series is about a terrorist attack on a small Colorado ski-town. The heroine is the FBI agent, but the hero thinks he’s the one with the badge.
Too Lethal to Love, the second Project VIPER tale, is due out at the end of November.
For me, reading romance is more than just an escape. It’s the promise of a happily ever after, no matter the odds. My goal is to give my readers a fun, steamy, tension-filled ride where that always concludes with a satisfying ending.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The publishing business is full of rejection. Bad reviews, rejections from editors and agents, social media trolls, etc. It’s easy to get discouraged when someone doesn’t love your work. Sometimes I don’t write for days because I can’t shake the feeling that I’m not good enough. But then I remember that there are readers out there who enjoy my books and can’t wait for the next one. Readers who send me messages telling me how much they loved a character, or how good the book made them feel. I try to remember those fans and write for them. Mostly, I have to remember that I’m writing for myself. These are my stories and my characters. If I’m happy with the result when I write “The End,” others will be too.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I used to think that writing was a solitary endeavor. I didn’t tell many people about my childhood dream of being a romance novelist and shared my work with a select few. Other authors are the only ones who understand how challenging and rewarding publishing a book can be. It’s crucial to have your author buddies in your corner.
