We were lucky to catch up with Kristian Riis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristian , thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a musician in the danish band Nephew. Over the years we won 11 Danish Grammy´s, been touring in front of big audiences of 50k+ people and I loved every show. I experienced people of different backgrounds and income levels having a great time smiling, singing along and enjoying. But then coming back home to my home in Copenhagen I realized that people didn’t even say hi to each other on the street and didn’t really interact with each other. I wanted to change that to create thriving communities and today Volcano are using elements from creativity and culture to create togetherness, take up the fight with loneliness and mental health issues for a big number of people here In Denmark.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think our approach to always being nice people and having a sympathetic team is key. We always try to act and meet clients and people the same way that we want them to meet us. I also believe that as a bunch of creatives (mainly musicians) working with urban planning is a new take on the real estate industry. We show how we involve citizens and create real change but working with inclusion and diversity.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Usually people have a real job or start a business to be able to afford to play music. I did it the other way around – made some money on my music and invested that in starting a business and building a team.
