We recently connected with Kristi Fox and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been working with students and families in education for almost 20 years. Throughout this time I have noticed a need for more practical information about sensory needs, what it is, and how to support people in our community. DrSensory.com was founded by a small group of women in various stages of parenthood, who have both personal and professional experience working with children with sensory needs. Our purpose at DrSensory.com is to bring awareness and supports to those in need of sensory tools while continuing to build a community where we can share experiences and information.
A few years ago I was celebrating a child with neurodivergence, highlighting the incredible gifts and talents the child has and wondering what amazing things they would do in their future. The parent of this child began to cry. They hadn’t ever allowed themselves to dream of their child in such a way, as they were navigating the difficulties of raising a neurodivergent child in a world that wasn’t as accepting of their child as they had hoped. They had come face to face with the challenges of raising a child whose life experiences may never mirror their own, and where their child was often misunderstood. We shared some stories and cried together, acknowledging that their child was blazing a trail on their own unique path, and the world would be a better place. Stories like these are why Dr.Sensory aims to do what it does. We want all parents and educators to be able to find answers to their questions and support in times that can range from anxious to emotional to simply searching for the latest research
It is moments like this one that highlight the need for a space for those of us who are looking to support one another. Sensory tools are meant to support regulation, calm anxieties, and create space so that deeper learning and connections are possible. Creating DrSensory.com is a way to support those in our communities who are looking for research and in need of supports, such as hands-on tools and strategies. At DrSensory.com we strive to be a place where people ask questions like “Will my child with sensory processing disorders be okay?” and “What can I do to help my child with sensory processing disorder, autism, ADHD, and the like”. We now know that many times there can be multiple diagnoses, or overlapping needs creating very unique profiles of our children.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think for me, it is really about connecting people. Working with students and having my own children with sensory needs, I feel that it can be very isolating for families and resources can be difficult to find. The goal, or mission, of DrSensory.com, is really to provide a hub of resources that anyone in the community can use. We not only provide the knowledge we have as professionals, but also interview many others in the industry including therapists, pediatricians, and psychologists, to name a few, to gain a greater perspective on how to best support the ones we love with heightened sensory needs.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is using my experiences through writing for a greater good. I have years of experience working with those with sensory needs; we all do at DrSensory.com. Being able to share those experiences and knowledge base with others so they can better support the ones they care for is really at our core.
